the great equalizer

As said by others, a 5'0" dwarf weighing 80 pounds, wielding a .22 pistol could easily dispatch an 8 footer weighing half a ton

That dwarf would want to be a good shot.

22 pistol rounds bounce off pine board at 3 metres.

He'd need to hit the eyes or would just make the 8 foot dude angry.

A 22 pistol is useless at distance and lacks any stopping power up close, the big guy would absorb the shots fired in the laughable "effective range" of the 22 and overpower the dwarf.

It could, however, be the catalyst needed for a new world record dwarf throw.

It's not like he's an elephant or something.

I could just imagine that... the massive man-giant towering over the dwarf, the bullets tearing tiny holes through his titanic hide, no more stopping him than mosquito bites; while the dwarf hastily backs up while shooting repeatedly, sweating profusely, as the giant lumbers toward him with amazingly long strides. Heh, cracks me up.

Although that wasn't meant as a realistic example... I'm just amplifying the difference between guns and other weapons.

I suppose it depends on who you ask in this case - if you're big and burly, fists can be your equalizers, but if you're a scrawny toothpick, having a big gun can mean the difference.

Fists don't even hold a candlestick to guns... never have, never will. As said by others, a 5'0" dwarf weighing 80 pounds, wielding a .22 pistol could easily dispatch an 8 footer weighing half a ton, proficient in kung-fu and street fighting. While such an extreme case would probably never happen, the fact that guns overpower any other form of weapon; sword, club, whatever, remains steadfast.

well it would be more like a .45, or a .357, .22's really aren't that bad i shot a deer with one about 10 meters away, bearly punctured the skin.

Having enough self-control, presence of mind and courage to walk away from a potential conflict without resorting to violence would make the dwarf the better man, in my opinion. Anyone can squeeze a trigger and take a life, but how many of us have the strength of character to walk away?

But that's how I feel about reality. I'm assuming that the question originally posed was in regard to gameplay. In a fantasy/adventure setting there shouldn't be any guns anyway. In the world of Oblivion, the equalizer obviously is magic.

One of the reasons I like games like Doom and Oblivion is because I can take out my aggressions in an imaginary setting by killing imaginary enemies. When I turn the PC off after venting, I can go back to being the sweet and lovable girl who has never held a gun and never will.

The gun is the great equalizer provided you're a decent shot. If you can't hit the side of a barn, you might as well stick with your fists.

LMAO, what if you can't hit the broad side of the barn even at that? Are you then completely effed?? XD

At that point, you should try to go somewhere with ridiculously low violent crime rates. Or go see the eye doctor. Whichever is more convenient.

Not necessarily. If you're the typical Average Joe, then you don't get into fights so often as to make fighting skills a necessary survival component. But just in case, follow M. Wolfe's advice.

Haha, what an amusing thread! I look forward to further adventures with the Giant and Dwarf. But back to the question at hand. Perhaps Kipling said it best?

IF..

IF you can keep your head when all about you

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,

But make allowance for their doubting too;

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,

Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,

Or being hated, don't give way to hating,

And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;

If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;

If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster

And treat those two impostors just the same;

If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken

Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,

And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings

And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,

And lose, and start again at your beginnings

And never breathe a word about your loss;

If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew

To serve your turn long after they are gone,

And so hold on when there is nothing in you

Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!'

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,

' Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch,

if neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,

If all men count with you, but none too much;

If you can fill the unforgiving minute

With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,

Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,

And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

—Rudyard Kipling

Well nigh impossible to follow that; however, suffice it to say that it is more about you (individual, group, or nation) than the caliber of weapon your adversary may choose to employ.

Uh....could you paraphrase and condense that into something a little easier to read and understand?
