Trypal7
Ok, I have installed this game a couple dozen times over the last 2 years or so and never had this problem until now, all of a sudden. After trying 3 different dvd/rom drives I get the same result; the install will get to between 2200-2700 mb installed then, bam, steam takes over and starts downloading the rest of the game as an "update". I have tried disconnecting from the internet and closing steam to try an keep that from happening but no luck with that. I installed FO3 and oblivion to see if it was a dvd/rom drive issue but no, they install just fine. Please help. jazzisparis
Bottom line, if you allow Steam to "take over", does it complete the installation successfully, and are you able to launch the game afterwards?I don't have the DVD version, but from what I understand, this is what's supposed to happen. Trypal7
It has always installed completely from the dvd. And no, I did'nt let steam continue to download 7-8 gigs of the game. I don't have unlimited download usage. Besides every time prior to this I was able to disconnect from the internet and close steam and let it install. I only had to connect at the begining of install. Maybe a problem with the dvd? I had it resurfaced and tried it again on all 3 drives, same thing happens. JimboUK
It does sound like there's an issue with the disk, you should be able to install the base game from DVD, Steam should then patch it. Try copying everything from the disk to a folder on your hard drive, see if Windows throws up any read errors.
Trypal7
Since resurfacing a few more times I was able to get further into the install, now it stalls around 4419 mb in lol. Still cleaned a few more times, disc doctor..all that..still Ok I tried to copy the contents to a folder and everything except 1 file transfers. So I try to copy just that file named "Fallout- New Vegas_disk1_2.sid" which is 1,458,532 KB and it stalls about 4/5 the way, the dvd player light starts blinking trying to read it .....and then boom Cyclic redundancy error. Which since the game stops installing around 4411-4419 thats right about where that file is on the disc. :/ Do I need to buy a whole new one or can I get a replacement at a reduced cost? RoyBatterian
Disc Doctor things are more likely to ruin your disc than repair it. There should be a game store near you , like Hastings or some other (not GameStop!) which has a professional resurfacing machine. Most of the time they charge like $2 per disc to resurface it and it only takes about 15 minutes.
JimboUK
If the above doesn't work you should be able to pick up a copy dirt cheap, the game is getting on a bit now. You can get the ultimate edition here for £5.00, that shouldn't require much if any patching.
