Merging Mods

Well i'm trying to keep my mod count down to avoid problems and lag. So this has lead me to merging

A couple of questions...

First should i only merge mods of the same type? i.e armour mods and armour mods, house mods and house mods. Or could i say merge a house mod and an armour mod?

What should i not merge with each other? Im guessing quests and new landscape sort mods would be the biggest dont go there's here, but a little advice would be nice.

Basically combination of the two above. What should i merge and what shouldn't i merge?

Also specifically Tycho's shield on back, there's alot of plugins for various modded shields. Could i merge all of those?

Thanks in advance.

Just few days ago I've experimented with mod merging and so far my installation works like a charm, so I'll give you my advice (though mind it, it's just from my personal experience).

First thing to do, was to make a proper load order (using BOSS in my case). Then I've gone through entire mod list and picked and grouped mods that I wanted to merge that were close to each other on the loading order. Whenever they were spearated by the bigger group of mods I wished not to merge/any file from the big overhaul mod (I'm using FCOM with OOO, MMM, Frans and WarCry so all of them), I closed the group and merged them in one plugin (later putting it in the load order in the place of the group of merged mods). Next group I put in another merged plugin. In overall I have 10 of the merged plugins. I've also cleaned them afterwards using TES4Edit.

What I didn't merge: FCOM, Overhauls and all that specific stuff that's meant to depend on some complicated connotations. As well as the biggest quest mods or pluging that were dependent on anything but the Oblivion.esm alone (somewhere there appeared a Cobl connection, but so far it wasn't problematic, though I didn't merge such mods on purpose). I also avoided merging antyhing that Wrye Bash marked as mergeable and could use in it's Bashed Patch. Also, I obviously avoided merging mods I may not like and feel like removing.

I do have the mod for automatic shield equip/unequip, I've merged it somewhere on the way (BOSS didn't order it at all so I just added it to a random package somewhere later in the loading order [in case it needed to overwrite mod-added sheilds] and as of now it works even better than I remember it working last time when it wasn't merged. So I think shield on back could be safe to merge, though I'm not sure if with the mods that add shields or somewhere after.
