Retribution
I notice that there are less happy endings in books and movies now than ones written/made a long time ago. A great example of this would be the ending of the Amber Spyglass. Anyone that has read the book can attest to how terrible the ending is. I could think of others, but that's definitely the best example I can come up with. Anyone feel the same way?

I think endings to many books reflect the general mood of the populace in which it was written. Nowadays, most people's lives do not have happy endings. katashy
A great example of this would be the ending of the Amber Spyglass That was an awesome book, but the ending was kinda sad... they'll never see each other again! They can only imagine... Yeah, there are a lot of unhappy endings, probably more than happy ones. I think it's because... now this is just an educated guess... but there were so many happy endngs, writers wanted to "break the mould" and wrote loads of unhappy ones. But now the unhappy outnumber the happy, s they should go back to happy ending to "brak the mould" again...
Retribution
I nearly cry every time I finish the book :P There are so many ways they could have seen each other, i.e. leave one window open and every other day Will goes into Lyra's world, then the other day Lyra goes into Will's world, each for like, 2 hours. That way they would get to see each other but wouldn't suffer any health effects. Well, I'm getting off-topic, so I'll stop XD

Authors were looking to do something different, and ended up being the same.P.S. Another example would be 'The Time Travelers Wife' (not the movie, the book). Yeah... still kinda sad... I think the... I forget the name... Angels? I think so... Anyway, I think they should've taught them how to travel worlds without the windows, even though it wouldve "taken a life time". ANYWAY, going back on topic... I forget now :P

Only a tiny bit. Thousands of windows were open for 300 years, what's one very small one open for about 60-70 years going to do? Phillip Pullman really f'd up on that one. They could decrease the size of the one in the land of the dead, and make a small portal just for them. They could also just create new portals every time, and get an angle to kill the Spectre created by it. I hope he'll write another book in which they see each other again, he would be stupid not to. Anyways, if I was Will, I wouldn't give a crap about the dust :P

Id just be like... you only live once, screw the dust and spectres, Im gonna be happy with Lyra and live my life. EDIT: But you dont live once in this boook, do you? Hmmm... Retribution
He wouldn't even need to worry about the dust. Such a minuscule amount would escape from the small portal that it wouldn't matter. I got so pissed off at the lousy ending, they saved the world, and that's what they get? Like I said, one window would lose basically no dust, so it wouldn't even matter if they opened up a lot, seeing as there were thousands open for hundreds of years and nothing happened.
