Common problem with a twist? (the yellow exlaimation marks)

So, I just set up Oblivion on this computer - installed it fresh tonight. Vanilla Oblivion, without Shivering Isles or Knights of the Nine.

I have downloaded OBSE, and then OBMM.

I have downloaded these mods:

Paladin Mod 1.4 (adds a questline & some NPCs)

Oblivion XP (changes scripted leveling system)

Enhanced Hotkeys (adds a hotkey UI & allows casting spells without equipping them)

Turn Undead as Restoration Spell (makes Turn Undead a spell in the restoration school)

Then I downloaded the famous Obscuro's Oblivion Overhaul!

And I loaded up my character and made her & lo and behold Captain Renault is naught but a head enxcased in a great yellow kite with a grey exclaimation mark - agh! I thought, this again. So I looked it up on here and it told me that my textures and meshes were probably in the Data folder, while they should be in the respective Textures and Meshes folders. Actually, they weren't even in the data folder yet. I simply hadn't added them. So, I did so.

There was no meshes folder, so I created one, and placed the meshes in there. There was also no sound folder, so I created one and placed all the sounds in there.

So my oblivion/data folder looks like this:

all fine, I guess. The Meshes and Sounds folders are the ones I made myself.

Holy gods! I thought, what are these?

These little guys! I never noticed them before. They open straight into the OBMM program when I click on them, and look something like this:

I have no idea what they are or who they belong to. I'm assuming they're either part of vanilla Oblivion, but I doubt it since they open into the mod manager; or they're with OOO, since nothing else has texture packs or anything like that. But I've already dealt with all the textures & meshes & sounds from OOO - what do these belong to?

It occurs to me that maybe they're part of OOO Full, and I've accidentally imported OOO Lite textures/meshes/sounds. In which case, I'm sort of stumped.

Anyway, my solution was to just bang them into the same folders as the other textures/meshes/sounds, on top of everything else, so my data folder looks like this:

http://i.imgur.com/lNo9Tim.png

I hold off putting Voices in Sound for now, and I have no idea where I'd even put Misc. So, this is my solution. I cross my fingers, &... open oblivion...

Now, I cant seem to take screenshots within the Oblivion game, so I'll have to recreate it in paint (it'll be easy). Basically, this:

with the smaller square being my mouse

I have never in my life seen anything like this!

What the hell!

So uh... I'm assuming this is perhaps because I created a new Meshes folder? Something like that? Or a conflict between the OBMM-opening files and the default files that are in the same folder? Or something else?

Either way.... I appreciate your help and advice, thank you for taking the time to read this ><

Those files are the compressed archives (BSA files) that the vanilla game uses for all of it's assets (meshes, textures, sounds etc). They all need to be in your Oblivion\Data folder or the game will not find them. When the game can't find different assets it uses different methods of alerting your (exclamation for meshes, purple for some types of texture errors etc).

OK so those things you have circled are BSA files (Bethesda Software Archive..or something along those lines) and should be right where they were from the start. Put them back. BSA is a compressed package of files and is the way most of the vanilla oblivion files come out of the box. This is why there are no meshes and textures folders to start with. It's also not uncommon to see BSA files in use with large mods, they are a handy way to package lots of materials and make upgrading a mod fairly simple for the mod author.

OKAY YEAH I

Did a little more digging just after posting this (was coming back to update to save anyone replying - was too late unfortunately =/) - I realised after re-reading something in the Common Problems thread mentioning BSA files that those were the default files. So, I moved them all back. So yeah, I got that - thanks for saying anyhow

So I tried to open it using my OBSE shortcut & it told me it couldn't, & asked me to make sure that they were in the same folder

And they weren't, so I did that. So that was the problem, I think - OOO requires OBSE, & I wasn't opening it with OBSE. Anyway, I tried it & it told me that I needed to update my Oblivion patch because it was outdated. So I went to the Bethesda website & got the v1.2 path, and it opened with OBSE,

and the yellow exclamation was gone!!!!

So my meshes were fine!!!!

but so was captain renault!!! LMAO

WHICH IS A TOTALLY DIFFERENT PROBLEM TO THE ONE I HAD BEFORE

However some of what looks like her armour is just purple, the rest of her is invisible - Striker says that's a texture error? So... I'll go & investigate wth is wrong with my textures... ><

anyway, yeah, thanks a lot guys. It wasn't such a unique problem after all, lol

EDIT: just to be thorough, I've also just installed Menuque v. 16, at the request of Enhanced Hotkeys, but none of that interferes with armour textures which seems to be the problem with captain renault. So I'm fairly certain the problem is located within OOO

Uhm... Okay I'm really stuck, I'm sorry =/

I can't work out whats wrong with my textures

I'm missing an armour texture somewhere because Captain Renault is just a face, a purple helmet and shoulder pads, some purple splodges & a mostly invisible body, and a Katana. Here's my Oblivion folder:

My Data folder:

My Textures folder:

http://i.imgur.com/4N4a3Tq.png

and inside the 'textures' folder (which is inside the textures folder lol) is all the stuff relating to OOO:

http://i.imgur.com/Bc0QePs.png

Maybe its because its in a separate textures folder? It'll go into the first textures folder, but wont go into the second? So it wont load any of the OOO textures? Because, like I said I created new folders - textures was there because of the Enhanced Hotkeys mod. Maybe it was only intended... hmmm...

I'll try that, brb!

OKAY IT WORKED

THAT SEEMS TO BE IT

Thank you so much for listening to me rambling, and for your advice, and to the community as a whole for your incredible work :) I just needed to place them in the primary textures folder, not their own textures subfolder in the textures folder >< everything is working as it should be now!! Fingers crossed!!!!

I'll assume you are manually installing as well as using OBMM.

I suggest using copy and paste from the right mouse click menu, as it's easy to drop into the wrong folder using dragon drops (drag and drop). The rule of thumb when copy and pasting is always paste into one level higher than you copied. Example ... if you right click and copy a folder named Textures in an extracted download you will right click your game's Data folder and select paste (one level higher than the game's Textures folder). Same deal with files ... if you right click and copy a file named cuirass.nif in an extracted download's Meshes\armor\JoesCoolArmor\cuirass.nif you would right click on the JoesCoolArmor folder in your game's folders and select paste (if for example you were installing the BBBed version of Joes Cool Armor after previously installing the non-BBBed version).

When copy/pasting files you won't get any indication that you've pasted into the wrong folder (so you need to pay attention). With folders the dead give away you're pasting into the wrong folder is when you DON'T get the Windows warning about there is already a folder named ... (if you get a Windows warning about files you need to make sure of what you're doing, as the mod you are trying to install is wanting to overwrite files from another mod).

When troubleshooting, your textures folder inside the Textures folder is a sure sign that you've done a bad job of copying.
