SayinNuthin
One of the things that bugs me, really bugs me is reputation loss for taking out hit squads! Seriously whats that about, I mean if you don't want me to kill your soldiers stop sending them after me. Not rocket science baldy! But I keep forgetting to try something. Take a spawn point (you know where they are) and mine the s**t out of it. Collect every single mine you come across, buy them whenever they turn up and just carpet the spawn point in frags, plasmas, pulses and gas bombs!.... In fact as soon as I'm done in the Sierra Madre I'm going to try it. Player.additem 433c ... let me see... 200 should do it.... Only really viable for some of the spots, especially if you run with companions. There are a few spawn points of the Legion hit squads that are right on Caravan routes, and when you get the "people randomly spawning and then walking back to where they belong in a straight line" glitch it gets worse. I know this because I tried it and ended up with lots of dead travelling traders and Crimson Caravan groups...and a few townsfolk from around the waste. You may be right but I've been bushwhacked so often by these jokers in some places that I've got their spawn-p down to the meter even without looking in the GECK! I've never seen any other NPC's on the spawn-p between north of the 'ranger Morales' roadblock, west of Grub'nGulp. And all there is on the NE corner of the valley east of the Great Khan's armoury are a few Geckos on the other side of the road... An how about the point between the C-Forlorn and the gas station? No NPC's have any business there either - though not far from Nelson, that is one of the more plausible locations. And that is one of my problems with it. I find it pretty immersion breaking stupid that so many squads of uniformed legionaries (one of them is wearing a banner for f**k sake's) can penetrate so deep into NCR controlled territory so often. One or two perhaps but there are hundreds of the buggers! An if the legion were that good or have so many covert specialists.... Naa...

It actually occurs in real life to this day with the U.S war in Afghanistan being a prime example. Despite thousands of U.S soldiers in-country, aerial surveillance, massive fire support, etc, the Taliban and other related insurgents are still fighting U.S forces deep within American held territory to this day. See the 2012 Camp Bastion raid as a good example of insurgent capabilities. Kabul, which is the capital of Afghanistan and therefore should be the safest, has seen multiple attacks over the years. Same in Iraq as well where Baghdad saw multiple car bombs go off hundreds of times a day at one point. Or go back as far as WW2 and note how often the Allies were able to deploy commandos, Jedburg teams, and other special operations type forces deep behind German, Italian, and Japanese lines. So yeah, it's entirely possible for Legion assassin teams to roam deep and far into NCR force multiple times. So yeah, it's entirely possible for Legion assassin teams to roam deep and far into NCR force multiple times. I'm not sure you are comparing like with like as regards Afghanistan where as you say a formal military (comparable to the NCR) are fighting guerrillas/insurgents. In game even the Powder-gangers, who may be the closest equivalent, wear identifiable uniforms. But wouldn't an 'insurgency mod' be cool! IEDs targeting civilians in Freeside and the strip, covert cells to uncover and destroy or set up if you wished.. As regards WWII examples, I'm pretty sure that at least in the early days commando operations and successes were.. exaggerated for propaganda reasons. If you read Evelyn Waugh's 'Sword Of Honour' semi-autobiographical novels you can see an extremely plausible account of the setting up and implementation of the British Commando regiments. As I say Waugh was there, he knew those people and was involved with the events, and he was a journalist and understood how the (often hilariously inept) actions became inspiring propaganda stories and why. And of course after that war everyone claims to be the 'eyes and ears of the resistance'... What was the alternative, that you were a collaborator? Where as if all these eyes-and-ears had been the fists and feet of the resistance then the occupation would have been as effectively untenable as the Americans (or Russians for that matter) has been in Afghanistan. But a simple mod to change the hit-squads clothes to mufti would go a long way for me... That git with the banner on his back (lols) you've crossed the whole of NCR territory with that have you?
dangman4ever
You missed my point there. My point was that despite all of the drones, spy satellites, aerial reconnaissance, long range thermal imaging, surveillance balloons, and other observation gear/hardware in combination with alert, well equipped, and well trained ground forces, US and NATO forces are still dealing with insurgent attacks deep inside US and NATO held areas after ten years of combat. So it's not surprising to see the NCR with its ill trained, ill equipped, and ill alert forces and limited to no surveillance options beyond the Mark 1 Eyeball having problems with uniformed enemy personnel ranging deep in their territory. Not to mention the limited control the NCR has over certain areas and the small size of their patrols are contributing factors. Plus there is propaganda value in wearing your uniform in enemy territory: If the NCR can't stop the Legion in full uniform on what is technically NCR territory, why should the inhabitants trust the competence of the NCR? Even some U.S spec ops teams wear full uniforms deep inside insurgent held areas in Afghanistan. There are similarities between Afghanistana and the Mojave: You have the U.S and NATO forces (NCR) fighting an insurgency made up of several different groups like the Taliban, local tribal forces, Haqqani network (Powder Gangers, Vipers, Jackals, Khans, Fiends, Omertas) with some of the insurgent forces being trained, equipped, and led by the Pakistani ISI (Caesar's Legion's assassin teams and Frumentarii). As for your questioning of resistance forces in WW2, the key difference between those resistance forces and the actions in Afghanistan is that those resistance forces were to have liberation from the outside via the Allies' eventual invasion. Those resistance forces didn't have to constantly launch raids and therefore risk detection and destruction in order to force the Germans out. They just had to bide their time, observe, and then be ready to launch when the Allies invaded. Not to mention that there is a bit of difference between the German brutality in subjugating resistance movements and American efforts to stop insurgencies. PLus the rise of near instant communications in the 20th century meant that the people at home at more exposed to the now then ever before. As such, constant attacks that degrade the civilian population's will are viable. With that said, resistance forces did rise up and engaged in actual combat when needed to. The Battle of Glières, Battle of Vercors, Battle of Rudniki Forest, Lwów Uprising, etc are examples of just that. The seven anti-partisan offensives in Yugoslavia area alone tied down Wehrmacht and SS forces that could have been deployed against the Soviets. SayinNuthin
Yea.. you make good points. A legion - gangs connection would almost certainly facilitate the process, which is 'implied' by the Khans story - You'll notice Carl is in civies though and I always chose to think he was the reason there was a hit squad waiting for me in the middle of Red Rock Canyon... But more pieces for our theoretical insurgency mod no? A mod that actually puts some of these pieces down rather than the player having to 'divine' them. I've never done anything, added any mods that is to change the legion. I suppose I should look and see what's been done.
dangman4ever
Not sure what you want in an "insurgency mod" besides more hide and seek missions. New Vegas Bounties II includes a few quests in uncovering a Legion spy ring.
