CTD on saving

Shoren

Recommended Posts

Yes I have been playing Oblivion quite while with no problems but then suddenly it has started to crash while I try save be it steamsave, auto-save or manual save (every time it tries to save it becomes corrupt save also as it CTD's middle of the save). I have tried reinstall but it didn't work at all. I have also scanned conflicts with Oblivion Mod Manager and no major ones. (I have also OBSE)

So I've got the exact same problem as Shoren. Sometimes this afternoon, everytime I save it CTDs and consequently corrupts the save file. I simply cannot make a new saved game; not by quicksave, autosave, 'new save', or with streamsave.

The link posted above by bben46 is fine, I'm sure, but it doesn't address this particular problem at all. Other than the fact the Oblivion is a horrible time waster and crashes whenever it pleases.

So I've got OOO/FCOM all that crap running. Has been running fine. Up until now. I've been pillaging Narind, and just killed Lareil - and everything went tits up.

If anyone has a suggestion as to why the game crashes *every* time I try to save, I would appreciate it.

Thanks!

Since you both are using different mods, I assume, first thing is to disable Autosave and saving on rest and waiting. They are known to corrupt saves. Some say quicksave also causes this but I use it all the time but occasionally delete it and make new ones with no issues.

Something both of you can try is to load your last known good save, then go to an interior with no other actors at all ie the Testinghall (coc testinghall in the console).

Use the wait function (T) and wait for one day more than whatever your game respawn is set to. Default is 3 but this can be changed by mods. This will clear all spawns and reset the world. Then try to save.

Check the size of your saves. If you have mods that add creatures, actors or items using scripts that use "placeatme: to spawn these things you could possibly have save bloat which can be fixed with Wrye Bash.

@ rizrizriz:

You're using OOO/FCOM...have you added or removed any mods recently? If so you need to update your Bashed Patch. Sometimes just altering your load order when using a Bashed Patch can cause CTD's if you don't update it every time a change is made. It's happened to me on occasion.

I know clearing that particular dungeon is challenging to say the least, but and having to do it again will be painful, but if you can't save at the moment you're going to have to anyway.

That's all I can think of since the OP and yourself use different setups.

I notice you have Streamline 2.1.esp. For one thing, that is a very old version. I suggest you use 3.0 for more stability when saving than 3.1, but I in fact do not use Streamline any longer for auto-saves because it was Streamline that had been causing me to CTD on save. Yes, and I think that's also true of 3.0 unfortunately. I now use it solely for FPS management. For saving I suggest this mod: Auto-save and time Simply edit its .INI file to disable whatever other features you don't need or want. I use Streamline for FPS management. No matter how you choose to use Streamline, it should be at the very end of your load order.

I also very strongly suggest you download BOSS and use that to automatically sort your load order.

  • 3 weeks later...

My problem is with crashing when saving. It happens with Autosave, Quicksave, and regular Save, but only to the west of Skingrad. I first thought that it was a problem with a mod that I had installed, but I pulled every single mod that changed anything west of Skingrad, and it still kept doing it.

After a clean re-install, I had Oblivion, Knights of the Nine, and Shivering Isles installed. Even with just those, it still did it. I have isolated the problem quite a bit, but I have no idea why it is still doing it.

The problem starts when I get close to Mortal Camp. I can usually walk past the camp or raid it once, as long as my level is less than 10th, but subsequent visits/bypassing will once again start it to crashing when attempting to save. If my character is 10th level or greater, it will always start doing this as soon as I attempt to save. Once it starts doing it, it will crash anywhere in the game.

The only way I can even play the game is to avoid the area immediately around Moral Camp. Has anyone else noticed this particular problem? :blink:

General Load-Order Guidelines

Here are the guidelines that I adhere to, personally.

~ Unofficial Oblivon Patch should always be first on the list. The fixes are great, but most aren't essential, so if a mod overwrites them its not a big deal, and the fixes have the potential for screwing up other mods if loaded later.

~ Offical Content (DLC's) should be loaded last, until you complete all quests associated with them (that includes buying all furniture for the houses and whatnot). Once they're complete, they can be safely moved up in the list. This is especially important for Knights of the Nine, which will have some fairly major problems unless loaded last (unless you get the UOP for KotN)

~ Major overhaul mods (OOO, Frans, MMM) should be loaded near the end. That gives you the most complete experience with any of those particular mods. It also lets you carefully choose which other mods to load afterwards... only move mods that you know will conflict and that you want the changes from. For example, I have Improved Soul Gems below OOO because I know that OOO changes the icons of some of the SG's, and ISG needs to be below to show through.

Some people will recommend putting larger mods first, but personally I disagree. There are a number of mods out there that make minor tweaks, and loading after a large mod will end up completely overwriting a chunk from one of the bigger mods because of the way conflicts work in Oblivion (even one minor change will take precedence over the entire record... for example, simply tweaking the speed of a weapon can cause every stat of that weapon to be retained to vanilla levels if loaded later).

So basically, it stacks up like this...

Oblivion.esm

Unofficial Oblivion Patch

<Minor Mods / DLC's (Post-Completion)>

<Major Overhaul Mod/Mods>

<Mods that specifically conflict with overhauls and need to take precedence>

<DLC's (Pre-Completion)>

Note: If using Mayu's Overhaul Mod. I recommend loading it after OOO or MMM

Expanded Load-Order Guidelines

by dev_akm

I would extend this to include:

Oblivion.esm

Unofficial Oblivion Patch

<Weather/Environment/Sound Mods>

<Minor Mods/New Items/Houses/DLC's (Post-Completion)>

<Major Overhaul Mods>

<Mods that specifically conflict with overhauls and need to take precedence>

<DLC's (Pre-Completion)>

<Quests>

<Compatibility Patches/UOMP/Merged Leveled Lists>

And a special-case warning for Knights.esp (Knights of the Nine) -- you may not be able to move it earlier than some other mods (some people have had problems after moving it before OOO, for example).

That's basically the structure I use and I have 140+ mods working well together.

Another way of describing this (posted by DMan77):

....

Oblivion

unoffical patch

Deeper realism mods that add sights and sounds

added content like weapons/items

gameplay changes, like 'must eat and sleep'

The OOO type

the 'new begining' type mod..

maigrets...You should also follow Dezi's load order guide if you're new to mods. BOSS is good, but not foolproof. There are a lot of mods it doesn't have in it's database and they have to be ordered manually.

Thank you for the suggestion. It seems that the Unofficial Oblivion Patch was what I needed. I went into Mortal Camp at level 13 for the first time, and managed to save without it crashing. The only change that I saw was a certain bottle of beer that acts weird was now gone.
