kodiak86
Yeah I played Falllout 3 for about a month with absolutely no problems exept for the occasional random crash. Then pretty much every single compoonent that could go bad in my computer did and I had to wipe my hard drive and reinstall fallout. Now it crashes at least once every half an hour. Everything is the exact same, the software is the same, the mods are the same, and my hardware is the same as before it died. I guess it's just a random thing. Yep, it's Bethesda's insidious getRandomCrash(random) function, I tell ya! They have a Fallout3 Daily Crash Quota to meet you know! :D

csb
Red in FO3Edit means a conflict exists. If the text is orange on the red background, it means that mod was the conflict "winner" and the one(s) with red text on a red background are the "losers." Get Miax's great guide on using FO3Edit and take a look at the chapter on conflict resolution and creating merge/plug-in patches. Hope this helps. csb
The "secret" (if it is really a secret) to a less crash-prone Fallout3 gaming experience is ensuring that everything is set up right from the beginning. 1. Get the latest video divers for your video card. This is especially true with nVidia. 2. Get the K-Lite codec utility, install it. In the new versions it automatically excludes fddshow from running for Oblivion and Fallout3. This gets rid of a lot of problems. 3. Don't install to the default, pick something like C:\Games\Fallout3 ... this is especially true on Vista. 4. Immediately patch to 1.7 after install. 5. Install any DLCs you are playing. If you downloaded the DLCs (instead of installing from a DVD), there is a utility to help you move the content from your Windows Games Live folder to the Fallout3\Data folder. It also will disable Live, which has caused problems for many. 6. Launch Fallout3 via the launcher and exit (this generates the Fallout3.ini file in the (username)\Documents\My Games\Fallout3 folder (on Vista ... My Documents\My Games on XP). a. Optionally -- Get any of the available tweak guides that tell you how to customize your .ini file. 7. Get Fallout Mod Manager (FOMM), ArchiveInvalidationInvalidated and FO3Edit if you are going to use plug-ins with your default install. a. Get Miax's great guiide on using FO3Edit.b. Religiously check your mods after install for conflicts using FO3Edit.c. Resolve the conflicts by creating (or updating) a merge patch/patch plug-in.d. Run FO3Edit in Master Update Mode -- this helps a lot in resolving some lingering Fallout3 issues not addressed by Bethesda. 8. You will still be subjected to Fallout3's built-in crashGame(random) function. Get used to it. Save often and in different slots -- this helps prevent save-game corruption. Those are the basics for trouble-free (or mostly trouble-free) play in Fallout3. You'll crash at times, but not nearly as often as you would if you didn't take these precautionary steps. Well, it really DOES matter what you do. - If you don't know how to set up a computer => go XBOX Why call me a liar for experiencing a stable game on a computer that is dedicated to gaiming. theLeeHarvey
I am one of those lucky few as well. I wont say I never have a CTD or freeze, but they are the rarity and they only happen to me occasionally when I am entering an area with an extreme amount of references for the game to load. Coming to Fallout 3 from Oblivion I had in mind what I needed to do to get a stable game. From the very beginning I have had UF3P, FOSE, FOMM and FO3Edit installed and have been making good use of them. I am convinced that the majority of crashing is caused by a lack of proper game setup and overtaxing by "dirty' mods or unresolved conflicts. There is a little bit of inherent instability with the Gamebryo engine, but in my opinion it's not nearly as bad a game as people like GSManners constantly whine about it being. (Seriously man, if you really hate the game as much as you let on, why do you bother playing it?) If you install and use the correct utilities, and have your PC set up correctly and optimized, you'll find that your problems with Fallout 3 will be cut to the bare minimum. A good place to go for advice on how to set up your machine is TweakGuides.com. I highly recommend using the tweaking companion and following the steps in the Fallout 3 tweaking section of the website.http://www.tweakguides.com/http://www.tweakguides.com/Fallout3_1.html
