Several things come to mind.

First, are you using Windows Vista and did you install Fallout3 to the default C:\Program Files directory? This causes all sorts of problems that can be avoided by installing to something like C:\Games\Fallout3.

Second, did you make sure you have the latest drivers for your video card? nVidia drivers can cause problems, but fortunately there are "stable" ones that seem to work with Fallout3.

Third, did you install the 1.7 patch immediately after installing Fallout? That fixes a bunch of things (but not others).

And of less likelihood, but still important:

Codecs ... but not as likely to cause an on start CTD, but ... get the K-Lite codec application and install it. The latest version turns off fddshow for Oblivion and Fallout3. Fddshow can cause problems for a lot of people ... usually as in-game freezes, but why not eliminate the problem from the get-go?

The amount of RAM your system has. At least 2GB (at least that's my recommendation).

The processor type/speed -- games like Fallout3, Witcher, Assassin's Creed need a lot of horsepower.

I'm sure others will add their insights to my list. :) I hope this helps.

wt version of windows u runnin?

make sure you got the latest game patch and updates.

Patch http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=7280

ArchiveInvalidation Invalidated http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=944

Fallout Mod Manager http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=640

If your usin Vista(FAIL) make sure you install the game outside of Program Files... like C:/bethesda/fallout3 or whatever...

i know running this game in the default location is ...bad... specially in Vista(FAIL).

Other than that......dunno, but i hope u get her goin....theres all these frackin awesome mods to try out! ^_^

anywho....hope that helps a bit

It depends on what video card is installed in your laptop -- a good many laptops have on-board graphics that aren't really suited to gaming use. Then again, others do. Check your manufacturer's Web site for the specifications of your laptop model. Make sure the graphics meet Fallout3's minimum specifications (check Bethesda's site for those).

check your laptop vidcard...

Start Menu-->All Programs-->Accessories-->System Tools-->System Information now on the left hand side in the menu click little + beside Components, then Display....

will tell you everything about your video card.

what gets me is that the start loads fine

its just when i click on start new game

it comes up with the normal loading screen with the slide and the little info bar in the bottom right and the loading reticule thing and about 5 seconds later then cuts out

i also find i cant load some things in the geck

aka weapons and faces when i click on them it comes up with some error and the options are

abort retry ignore

i think my computers RETARDED :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash:

No, not retarded, just that the onboard-video isn't up to running Fallout3. The initial load screen takes far less video resources than actually loading a new game. So you're fine until loading the more intense video (and other) resources needed for an actual game (new or not). So your video card goes PFFFT and Fallout3 goes BOOM.
