Computer Crashes

Recommended Posts

I really don't know where else to post this... so I'll do it in here...

I just bought a computer off my buddy, it came with:

Pentium 4 2.4ghz

1gb Ram

ATI Radeon X800 Pro 256mb

So I had to purchase a new hard drive and DVD burner. But I seem to be experiencing a few problems... and it only occurs when I'm playing games... My computer will just crash when I'm playing... when its Morrowind it just resets to the desktop, and Doom 3 seems to totally reset my computer... same with Command and Conquer Generals... it just resets... :(... now I shut off "Auto reset" when there is an error... but it still does it...

I'm running windows XP but I don't have any of the service packs as I'm not hooked up to the internet yet... a few people seem to think that maybe thats the problem... and its not a temperature issue because my computer never seems to exceed 34 degrees celcius.... and its really getting annoying that it just resets itself all the time...

So if anyone can help me out, it'd be much appreciated :)

I'm afraid this time I cannot help. All I would say is that Morrowind does crash to desktop periodically. There have been some threads - a long time back but they should still be discoverable - about how to minimise the risk of this happening. If the problem is with the machine it's outside my knowledge I'm afraid.

What kind of mother board? I had stability problems with the system I build last summer with an ASUS AGP mother board (VIA chipset) and NVidia 6600GT AGP video card. I finally ended up replacing the mother board with a new one with NVidia chipset and PCI/E video and a new PCI/E 6600GT video card. I got some improvement with different version of MS patches and stuff for WinXP but finally just replaced the hardware since I had heat problems with the AGP video card running very waram (although the cpu and case temp were fine, only the video card temp was high). I haven't had problems since I replaced the motherboard and the video card.

You might want to check the support site for your motherboard vendor or the ATI support site. You probably should at least try to get up to Win XP SP 2 for stability and better security.

  • 4 weeks later...

I found out the problem... it was my configuration of RAM... I had 2 sticks of 256, and one stick of 512... the 2 sticks of 256 were running in dual channel,... and the stick of 512 was searching for its companion... but there wasn't one... so it would crash my system... I took out the stick of 512, and I'm now running 2 sticks of 256 dual channel... and it has yet to crash...

Now I have to buy a new stick of 512 so I can have a gig and half! woot

You can lock this up if you'd like.. I figured out my problem!
