  1. The Narnia books are on my list to read after seeing the movie last year. I read C.S. Lewis adult fantasy trilogy Out of the Silent Planet/Perelandra/That Hideous Strength many years ago and enjoyed those. Probably worth looking into if you have enjoyed Narnia. J. G. Ballard is an excellent , albeit often rather strange, writer in general although I haven't read Empire of the Sun but did thoroughly enjoy the movie. Another book on my to be read list. Also, seeing the movie may provide some insight into why many of Ballard's books are rather strange.
  2. For another Umbra story... I've always liked Conjuration as a skill in Morrowind and now in Oblivion. One noticeable difference with the new AI is that the monsters and NPCs are a lot more likely to chase the player summoning the critters rather than just fight the summoned critters until they are finally worn down. If I can successivly hide with my stealth ability this isn't an issue but at my level Umbra seemed awfully good at finding me. So most of my fight with Umbra consisted of me summoning Daedroth and Clannfear (switched to the latter since they are faster and caught up with Umbra more quickly to force her to pay attention for a bit) while running laps around a large hall with Umbra in hot pursuit swinging at me as fast as she could whenever she got close enough. I ended up using some healing potions and heal minor wounds as well. To a fly on the walll I'm sure that the spectacle of the Breton Witch hunter fleeing before Umbra and doing laps around the room must have been better than any Arena fight. Too bad noone was taking bets. I lost count of how many Daedroth and Clannfear it took but in the end it was another victory for Conjuration and rapidly regenerating Magicka. For another entertaining anecdote, I originally talked with the thieves guild doyen and played the minigame to get his disposition to me to max while whatisname Lex, the head of the local city guards and the arch nemesis of the thieves guild was standing right next to us. And of course he has a specific dislike for the doyen of the Thieves Guild as well but he just stood casually by and wandered off when I was done with the conversation. Maybe there's a special artificial stupidity optin for the cops? Later the same day after getting into the Thieves Guild, I accidentally got a bounty for pcikpocketing someone when I attempted to talk to them and forgot I was in stealth mode. The same local constable Lex then pursued me. While my conjured Daedroths seemed quite capable of dealing with him, apparently he's a key character so he's an immortal cop and just goes unconscious momentarily rather than dieing. I finally got away by swimming back and forth between the Imperial City waterfront and the coast opposite it using an amulte that has constant effect water breathing. Lex stayed in hot pursuit for quite a while and was there to whack at me when I surfaced most of the time or caught up quickly. I eventually lost him at some point so I could finally find the local Thieves Guild contact to buy off my bounty (which had escalated at that point since I'd also killed a guard (or actually my Daedroth did) in the process of running from the law as well.
  3. If you summon a bound weapon and then mount your horse while the spell is in effect, the spell remains indefinitely as far as I can tell until you equip another weapon (or put your weapon away). I haven't experimented with it very far but was a little suprised to find a glitch similar to the ones that plagues bound weapons in Morrowind originally. You get the message that you can't unequip the bound weapon when mounting so it may be this glitch is due to a specific bix to avoid the "unequipping" bug from Morrowind pre-patches. Should this be in spoilers? I think not but won't object if a moderator wants to move it.
  4. In Morrowind.ini there was a parameter to enable screen shots caled something obvious like AllowScreenShots. I haven't looked at the Oblivion .ini file yet but there may well be the same type of parameter that you need to set.
  5. While resting in the Tel Vos dungeon, I was surprised by a Dark Brotherhood assasin. I was in the hallway outside the big room with the collapsed scafolding in the basement of the Tel Vos prison tower. Unfortunately for the assassin he "materialized" in the door between the two cells. The only challenge in dispatching him was trying to find enough of him stickking out of the door to hit him rather than the door. Because it was two separate cells, there was no sign at all of the assassin when I went through the "door" (really into the next cell) to the big room in the tower basement.
  6. Lol to protect yourself good with that you'l need a high skill level in light heavy AND medium armor. ... An interesting cobination but Is there any heavy armor in the picture? I think it is dreugh, orcish, and adamantium which are all medium and the glass which is light. What's heavy?
  7. In my latest game, I've joined House Televani so am doing quests for Lord Aryan around Tel Vos. I went through the dungeon in order to do the blighted queen quest in the local egg mine. I picked up the pages as I have before left by the the Imperials who were building the dungeon for Tel Vos. The final journal entry is supposed to have been left by the author when he came face to face with the fire elemental which was infesting the dungeon. Picture my great surprise this time when all I found were the toes(?) of a dead fire elemental poking out of a pool of lava. Presumably the fire elemental must have wandered into the lava at some point while I was elsewhere in the dungeon and take enough damage to be dead and recumbant in the lava by time I got to him With other characters I have some times failed to find the fire elemental in the Tel Vos dungeon but this is the first time I actually found out what had become of it..
  8. How do I rejoin the temple after being expelled for a second time? Since I coulldn't find it with a several permutations of searches in spoilers, the console command to let you rejoin the Temple after you've alread been expelled and rejoined once is: set expTemple to 0 This eliminates the record of your prior expulsion. I expect that console commands for rejoining after a second expulsion other factions is ismilar for the ones that allow rejoining. (After performing the inperial legion quest to stop an ordinator who was slandering the legion, I was fair game for every wandering ordinator in Vivec. It was fine ti fight them and kill them without any bounty incurred but in one instance I accidentally hit a bystander so one of the Ordinators who had spontaneously attacked me already demanded my surrender or pay the fine. Since I didn't and continued fighting him anyway, I was expelled again. For something like that I'm quite willing to use the console "cheat" to correct things.
  9. I downloaded Arena when Bethesda put it up on their site for their 10th anninversary but didn't start playing it until late fall. It appears there was a fair amount of discussion on the game in the old Elder Scrolls forum right after Bethesda put it up but that was lost when they restarted the forums on the elderscrolls site. I did find some helpful links for getting started in Arena on stuff like the differences in character classes and similar which aren't descirbed very well in the readme files with the downloadable copy of the game. One of the most useful links I found was to an on line copy of the original manual: <http://www.svatopluk.com/arena/manual/>.
