simon445
So I was playing oblivion and everything was fine, and than I shut it down, and did some research on the computer and went to play again and it did this I don't know what's going on as I am not a computer wiz so I was hoping someone around here might be able to help. If it is the graphics card can somebody give me a recomendation for a good video card? Nvidia would be great. As I think that is what I have to use with this mother board. oh and I only have a 450 power supply, (weak I know). Thanks, Simon
bben46
If that is a tube type monitor, I would say you have lost vertical sync and it is a bad monitor. If you can, try your monitor on another computer, and another monitor on your computer. This will isolate whether it is a monitor or board problem. 450 Watts is a little low for a high end video card, but it should be OK for a low end card. It will depend on what else you are running in the computer and the cooling. Also, many less expensive pre-built computers use an underpowered power supply (HP, Dell & others) It may be rated at 450W, but it will not handle that kind of load for long without overheating. These computers are intended for office type applications where the load on the power supply may jump up some when using a lot of graphics, then drop back. This allows the power supply and graphics card to cool off between loads. Using a power hungry game like Oblivion the graphics usage stays at a high level for an extended time causing the graphics card, the CPU and the power supply to be put under a strain. Before getting a new card be sure your motherboard and power supply can support the card you want.
simon445
It's a flat screen LCD type of deal, and I plan on upgrading a couple things such a psu, gpu and new/more ram all at once, and was just curious what you guys thought, and I was only going to do that if a---- I get the job I am applying for next week, And b if it is actually the graphics card. But I appreciate the reply about the tube monitor, something to keep in mind for possible future troubles Simon

Illiad86
ohh man that doesn't look good at all hun :( What kind of card do you have? Did you change you drivers recently? Did you mess with the refresh rate? Does this happen with any other game? Are you getting a Blue Screen of Death? That usually is a sign of overheating or a faulty graphics card...or lol a lot of the time it's dust or a bad connection. Give the computer a good cleaning. Remove the RAM and GPU (can air the slots or with me I use a paintbrush) and put them back in. Can air the CPU cooler too. I've fixed a lot of computers and 75% of the time, it's been dust. The first thing I do before even getting into troubleshooting is give the computer a thorough cleaning. I fix my family's computers, which the boyfriend and I built for them, and most of them won't even open the computer in fear of breaking it lol. Hehe, they just gave us the money and told us to build it. "Make it as nice as it can be with what I gave ya" :) FYI, I'm running a 90nm Windsor dual core (power hog even at stock speed) at 125W (i think, it possibly could be more lol) and an old 90nm 7950GT on a 450W PSU currently. I've never had a crash. Most graphics card manufacturers recommend a much higher PSU than what you really need. 550-600W is reasonable for a nice system these days I think. All depends on if you want to overclock your already 145W quad core CPU or overclock the graphics card (which I never really recommend, the stinkers already run hot just the way they are.) A godly un-powered card is a 4650 . It's a wee bit slower than a 3870, which runs Oblivion smooth as a baby's bottom on max resolution with 8xAA and HDR, and it's very very affordable (anywhere from 45-75 bucks...don't get the HIS one, the fan died). For Nvidia, I'm not too sure these days, as I don't keep up with them as much as I do ATI. I always look for the deals, and Nvidia's older cards are still too expensive (and their low end cards are just plain sad, ATIs low end cards stomp them). Their cards are better in some ways, but it all depends on the game really.
simon445
It had 2 SLI 7900 GT/ GTO's is how it was but then I switched over one card to the top to see if it was the card going out, and it still did it, but just now I started the game and it worked just fine, but it didn't like 4 hours ago. So yeah, I am needless to say confused, and the best part it is that it worked and ran then I loaded my game and had the original problem of a CTD on fast travel to Weynon prairie so I have to deal with that issue, once I get this one all figured out. How well does oblivion run for you with your 7950? Simon P.S. once again, I really appreciate all of you guy's help.

Illiad86
yeah, it's most likely dust either on the pins or in the slot if it's now currently working :) I said how well it runs on that other topic about HDR and Bloom :) now wait wait here...oh dear, a socket 939 motherboard. I hope you are considering upgrading everything haha. I don't think you can even get RAM for that anymore :P RAM that's out currently would not work with your motherboard, but you can get a motherboard that's Socket AM2+/AM3 ready (you can still use your old CPU) and 4GB of DDR2 800 RAM for about $160 total. I can kinda guess that your XP is probably 32-bit, so you'll only get 3.5GB out of the 4, which is still very nice :) http://www.gigabyte.us/Products/Motherboar...tName=GA-K8NF-9 (that's your board) hehe very nice board for it's time :) Please feel free to PM me if you have questions about upgrading, I enjoy helping people out about their computers. The boyfriend and I are our family's "Geek Squad". :D
