Turning a texture into an .esp

Okay... I know what I'm wanting, and the textures are out there (And the modder says they don't mind reuse)

http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=454 < -- for the Black Sheriff hat texture

Basically what I'm trying to do is use this Duster...

http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8263

The All black version of it (Sans the Shady Hat texture) and use a the black textured Sheriff's hat.

The textures replace the normal textures for Lucas Simms and the other people who use the Sheriff's have the textures, which I don't want. I want it as a unuique unused item.... and similarly the All black mod is for some reason set as an ESM instead of an ESP and it seems to cause CTDs almost imediately... even when I load it into the GECK it seems to freeze my GECK.

I made a request for someone to do what I'm mentioning here, but it seems to have been pushed way back and ignored, so instead... I was wondering if someone can give me a summerized version of how to do it?

I think what you'd need to do is create a new hat item and rename the texture that's gonna replace it.

One way to do it is I believe go into the GECK and find the hat base model you want to use, then edit it and change it's ID name. Very important, when you save it, it'll ask if you want to create a new object. Say yes. Then edit the new hat by changing the texture associated with it to the new one.

Then make sure you get a version of your hat by placing it somewhere.

I could be wrong about this. I'm certainly not being very specific. Sorry, I'm too busy to check it all in the GECK myself right now (yet, I'm browsing these forums...).

Alright, I'll try that for the Hat... any suggestions on the all black duster? the black sheriffs outfit isn't what I'm looking for, really, and that one is an ESM with just the ESM no textures. :(

I found the textures inside the ESM, it seems to be working better with the GECK now, however I don't know how to get the Texture out of the GECK and into a .dds so I can add it to a different item... I thought Fallout Utility would do it, but I can't seem to get it to run properly...

Ok as far as I understand you want to make a unique version of Simm's duster using the Black Duster texture.

For some reason the author of the Black Duster Mod put the textures in .bsa file so you'll need to extract the textures from it first. To do this you'll need Fallout Mod Manager. Run FOMM and on the right you'll see a button called BSA unpacker, click that and then open up the .bsa file. Once that's done click extract all on the bottom and select where you want to extract the files.

Now to create the new item there are 2 ways to do it:

1- Make a new mesh by changing the texture in the .nif file using nifskope.

2- Create a Texture Set and apply it to the the mesh using the GECK.

What Nagaoka was talking about above was the second way which is easier.

First you want the create a new Texture Set

- Open up GECK and load Fallout.esm ONLY, find Texture Set on the left side of the Object Window and click it (it's at the bottom of the "Miscellaneous" section).

- Select a clothing texture (like 1950sSuitDark) and change it's name to something easy to remember (eg BlackDusterTexture).

- Click Diffuse then the Edit button and browse to the folder where you extracted the textures and select the one called blackblazer1 next click Normal/Gloss and select the file called blackblazer1_n.

- Click OK and whne the box pops up click Yes to create a new form.

The next step is to create the new armor with the new texture set.

- Go to the Armor section and click the the entry called LucasSimms you'll see the 3 entries on the right. You can modify any of them but for this example we'll use RegulatorDuster doubleclick it and change the name (eg to BlackDuster).,

- On the top right side of the window there are Male and Female Biped Model sections. Under Male click the Edit button. The Model Data window pops up, this is where you'll apply the new texture, doubleclick Upperbody.

- Another window will pop up listing texture sets, browse to the one you created and doubleclick it. Do the same for the Arms entry then click OK.

- If you want you can also change the armor rating and enchantments of your duster while you're here.

- Click OK and then Yes to create the new form.

That's it! All you need to do next is add it to the gaem worls and then save the plugin. and you're good to go.

**Disclaimer**

It's late and I'm tired so I sure there are typos and grammar errors but the important stuff is there. I'll check back later to see if you're having any problems. Good luck!

Thank you! I can't believe I didnt' think of using the BSA on FOMM.

That was my only hang up really, getting the actual textures out and set up. I was going through Fallout Edit, Fallout Utility, everything but the FOMM.

I was even playing with the textures in GECK.... Regulator Duster + 10mm Silencer texture looks pretty funny, same with the outcast stuff hehe. It was odd but entertaining for a while. :-) Thank you! I'm glad that I finally got this figured out. i've been messing with it for a while now trying to figureo ut how to export that texture.
