sgtKraigO
I thought it would be cool if the player could have their own ranch, and not just some player home called a ranch but an actual ranch that would bring in money. The player could purchase a plot of land from someone in the NCR or the local town (this depends on where the land is located). Different spots could be more fertile and have more space than others but cost more, fertility would dictate how profitable crops/animals are while space would dictate how much the player can build/grow. They could raise Bighorners, Brahmin, and Mole Rats, and grow crops, different animals/crops would cost more than others but bring in more money. The player could also hire farm hands and guards, build and upgrade their house and various buildings, expand their land, build more pens for the animals, and choose who they want to sell to. All of this (excluding the house) would effect profits. As for locations I was thinking somewhere near Goodsprings, Brooks Tumbleweed Ranch, Horowitz Farmstead, Mole Rat Ranch, Wolfhorn Ranch, or near Jacobstown. Some of the buildings could be a player house, barn, field hands barracks, guard barracks, animal pens, and possibly a work shop. devinpatterson
Sounds like fun, lets write up some ideas. Maybe if you get big enough the brahmin barons might swing by (hopefully not to burn you down), or CC caravans make your ranch a common stopover for goods, etc. Lots of ideas. sgtKraigO
I don't think this should be a big mod, I would be happy with just only 1 plot of land available for purchase. I just though it would be cool to have options.

I just though it would be cool to have options. No worries, just run by me some of your ideas. You did mention crops and some commerce right? Seems like those could offer some creative opportunities. Might be fun to try some of the OWB botanical tech as well. Could be as conservative as some seed packs or as adventuresome as dragging the biological research station over to the farm (although I can't remember how big it is/was). Also I did some re-textures of brahmin for another mod, they might add some unique custom character to a farm (or brahmalos); http://static-1.nexusmods.com/15/mods/130/images/40027-1-1296533170.jpg
sgtKraigO
That's cool, but I was thinking of just regular brahmin. I'm not looking for a bunch of new stuff, just a simple ranch that can be expanded on. The player buys the land (possibly with a house on it already), build animal pens, cultivate the land, purchase the the animals and crops from someone either at the farm or somewhere in the mojave. The crops will bring in money fast but not as much while the animals will bring larger amounts but at a slower rate. After the player saves up enough money they can hire workers, guards, build a barn and more pens, cultivate more land, and expand on their house. I'll leave that one to you brother.

devinpatterson
I have an idea that might be cool/better variation. Maybe just adding a hearthfire (skyrim) type setup to various existing farms. So if you decide to setup shop in an abandoned farm, various items could be dragged, scavenged, bought or bartered to bring back and fix the place up. There are a lot of farms and each could be made into a player home (um depending on how habitable they are). Each's farms character and condition could influence what options are available. For instance Matthews Animal Husbandry Farm is pretty trashed and woldn't offer as many opportunities as Wolfhorn Ranch. But it could be big things and little things. I just recently got skyrim and havn't even had a chance to fix up any houses, but I'd go along with the idea that if you have an item in inventory you could select it in some sort of dialog and it would be artistically placed (by us the mod authors, simply enable from a disabled state) in the farm and 1 instance of the item would be removed from inventory. Larger stuff like brahmin might require cash, or a dialog with a merchant etc.
