Bethesda's "Giant Middle Finger"

Bigger than Ireland? Yup. Morrowind disappearing or at least drastically changed should be about right. The eruption of Karakatoa and Tamboa were recorded to have been heard as far away as 4000km away. Tsunamis Karakatoa generated were so powerful that it lifted entire passenger ships and deposited them as far as 10km inland. Come to think about it, Winterhold Collapse may indeed have been an effect of the red mountain. Huge tsunami and earthquakes from the original explosion may have weakened the bedrock, that an sufficiently powerful aftershock could create another set of tsunami and take down the city.

Putting this in the spoiler forum due to DB content.

I've been really immersing myself in the Dragonborn add-on lately. Reading, talking, wandering...and overall, I think Bethesda gave a giant "screw you" to all the players (myself included) who wanted to go back to Morrowind. Various conversations and literary items tell us that Vvardenfell is now completely uninhabitable thanks to Red Mountain. Vivec, Gnisis, Balmora, and Ald-Ruhn are confirmed as destroyed, and there's confirmed damage across the mainland too.

I've also been looking at the world map for Solstheim itself. It's NOTHING like the original Bloodmoon island. There are familiar landmarks, such as Raven Rock, Fort Frostmoth, Skaal Village, etc., but the layout's all wrong. Sure, the island got blasted by the eruption of Red Mountain, but it wouldn't change the positioning of things to that extent.

Overall, I just feel like Bethesda stuck a finger in the faces of those who wanted to return to the land of the Silt Striders...sort of an indirect way of saying, "You want to go back to Morrowind? Here, we'll slap a bunch of crap together that you'll recognise to shut you up."

while i agree with your point of view i can also understand bethesda point of view

and that is the limitations of consoles compared with pc s and that is i think one of the main reasons why so many of the factions and DLC s content are so shallow and not because of lack of imagination

it is a bit sad but on the other hand the console version of these games are what brings in the money and the pc version the fame and even with the next generation of consoles and the next bethesda game § which i hope is fallout 4 probably late this year or early next) we will see the same empty lands as with skyrim and its dlc s

Ok, so, i have a friend who is a volcanologist... They have several rough formulas which you can use to calculate the explocivity and pyroclastic load of volcanoes based on size and type...

Based on a rough approximation of Red Mountain's size as 150km (based on the map) and the fact it is a highly active pyroclastic volcano with fluid lava (indicating high water content, thus lots of steam and pressure potential) it's payload is somewhere between 20 and 60 THOUSAND cubic kilometers of debris. That's more than enough debris to fill in the Inner Sea and attach Solsthiem to the mainland. Not to mention volcanic fallout from the numerous secondary volcanoes throughout the Velothi mountains.

Its almost a good thing Bethesda doesn't know much about geology...

NOOOO, I believe Vivec foresaw the eruption. When the whole ordeal about Almalexia was over, he vanished because he knew Nerevar Reborn wouldn't be inclined to listen to him at that point. A while after that, when Nerevar had had time to cool down, he made contact again and explained the situation. Then they both used their combined power to soften the blow Nirn would suffer from that super-volcanoes eruption. That's why they both ceased to exist.

Not sure about how close to canon this might be, but it at least sounds legit.

Well, Vivec didn't cease to exist... He went else where. Probably jamming out with the Magne'Ge. Hanging out in Akavir... Maybe visiting Lyg. He's a CHIM, so he could survive the Pankratosword if he really wanted to. The Nerevarine is something of another story... We don't know what happened him, which makes him unique as far as TES characters go. The Eternal Champion served Uriel until his death (probably lying bleeding in the streets protecting the Emperor's flight to the Prison). The Agent exploded when the Numidium was 'destroyed'. The Hero of Kavatch became Sheogorath, and the Last Dragonborn gets to spend an eternity locked in the vaults of Apochypha.
