In Game Video Recording Software!

Recommended Posts

I did a search for people wanting to make videos in game. I turned up a lot of FRAPS and Xfire stuff. Since I do not use xfire and that leaves only FRAPS and all the posts were a little old and non specific, I had some questions.

Do any of you record your game play?

What recorder do you think is the best?

Have you ever had any issues with the recorder or how your videos turned out?

Kinda be nice to be able to get multiple angles as well. Like you see in Machinima videos.

I would like to add my own music but would still want the ability to capture it from the game as well. I am not really into trialware/freeware as usually there are options missing in the former and not a lot of options in the latter. So hopefully your recommendations will give me the ability to make an informed buying decision. I would be using Adobe Master Collection CS4 for all my editing stuff (of course that does not mean I know how to use it  ) so I am covered there. So anything else you might want to add as far as making a good video or questions I should have asked that I did not helps too. Any help you guys/gals provide will be greatly appreciated. :thanks:

You lucky.....! Then you've got Adobe Premier and After Effects!! I only have the web premium...

The basics always work the same, you can go to Lynda.com and try out the first couple of free videos to work with these programs. You don't get to learn the details, but it provides you with a good start. I got a month subscription for free when I bought web premium...those tutorials are really valuable. Even the first free ones.

I've seen some others as GameCam, but fraps always gave me the best experience...

A few notes you might want to know (about fraps too):

Set the FPS high, like 60 or something. As it seems to cap your game while recording. Setting a higher than you have doesn't matter but is better.

Modded games usually offer other camera-angles.

If you're playing games like Oblivion and Fallout you might want to kill yourself (in the console, and directly resurrect).

That gives a good nice other angle.

When you're moving while recording, do it straight. Most shots look bad when you're making a turn while recording.

(Or you've got to change the settings in such way it will look nice...I've never tried actually...maybe some speed settings.)

Things are going to look different when you look afterwards. So always make a few shots of the same thing/angle as you might just miss that magic moment otherwise.

Here was an post about filming concerning beth-games, but it doesn't contain that much more..

Depending on your video card you've got to change your video-settings to decide whether to always have a quality-shot. At certain moments the game is quite stressed and would force you to lower down the quality-settings at the game to achieve a quality-shot (without a lower FPS). It's a balance that's always difficult to choose, but once you've got one..stick to it.

Cool thanks for your input and info. Are you saying to set the FPS high in the game or in FRAPS? Also I pretty much the same machine I used when I played Oblivion the first time and cannot ever remember having any issues with performance having everything turned up high and that was with a 512MB vcard. Now I have a GeForce 9800 GT 1GB and it runs everything pretty smooth. Just to give you an example though as to the limitations of my machine, I could not run the new Red Faction Guerrilla game, it would just CTD. Batman Arkham Asylum will stutter and run slow at times. uhm... Prototype runs a bit slow too but stuff like COD4 plays really well. These might all have something to do with the different engines as well. I have been putting off upgrading my machine but I know I should put some new pieces in it. Kind of why I don't start Oblivion or Fallout 3 again, time and upgrading = new install of Windows. (for me at least)

Fraps..it has a setting that literally limits the FPS Max. The difference is less noticeable with better cards, but it also depends on what you're going to record. Games without mods would let it be even less often.... I didn't know if you meant games in general first :).

Some games just work buggy with games, that's why they release that many versions of the graphics driver. (While sometimes things worsen and lower drivers would work. ) You might want to try to run RedFaction in windowed mode btw..I also read about putting it on a low priority..which is a tricky act though.

The recording framerate is worth mentioning too. There really isn't any need to record 60fps, TV and movies don't run at that speed and they look just fine. This is especially true if fraps is dragging your framerate down to 25-30, recording at 60fps while the game itself is running at less than half of that is a waste.

Yeah, I can confirm that. Especially for people with cards that aren't that good it will make a difference. Turning off VSync is also mentioned at fraps and can indeed help push up FPS. It's also really inadvisable to record at a lower resolution than your game is running. If you're getting a lower one...set the game to it and record it at that resolution..it'll just increase framerate and allow you to set higher quality settings.

It's worth keeping it at full screen if you've got the disk space and it doesn't turn into a slide show, half my resolution (1920x1200) is 960x600, not even HD. Youtube likes higher resolutions too as long as the bitrate is kept up, for that I downscale to 720p when I've finished editing.
