NCR variation

The NCR is got to be my favorite faction in New Vegas but their regular troopers seem to lack diversity and are under-equipped for one of the strongest armies of the post war era. I think someone should make a mod that creates different NCR trooper types that are equipped according to their role, which could bring a level of professionalism to the NCR. Note this idea may require the DLC packs and perhaps some new mods

Note these are the in the field patrolling soldiers so this would not cover soldiers you will find in NCR camps.

In the future this list will be updated. Please make your comments.

NCR Rifleman: The most common and basic type of rank and file grunt in the NCR army. Equipped with service rifles, 9mm pistol, 2 frag grenades, combat knife, trooper armour (or face wrap armour) and a trooper helmet (or google helmet).

NCR Assault Trooper: A NCR trooper who specializes in close combat and is slightly better skilled in hand to hand fighting. Uses either 9mm SMG or a Caravan Shotgun for range, knuckle duster or a combat knife for melee. Armour is the same as Rifleman

NCR Marksman: A NCR trooper who is better skilled at mid to long ranged combat. Unlike snipers, marksmen are attached to regular infantry squads. Uses scoped Varmint Rifles, 9mm pistol, and a knife, wears same armour as regular troopers

NCR Gunner: A NCR trooper armed with an Automatic Rifle (requires Dead Money) who is meant to bring down heavy suppressing fire that pins enemies down and allows other troopers to make flanking maneuvers. Wears Bandoleer armour

NCR Grenadier: A NCR trooper trained in the usage of explosives. Is capable of raining down long range explosive death with the Grenade Rifle. Has a 9mm and a combat knife for sidearms. Wear same armour as the Gunner (however I am thinking of a new armour that gives +5 to explosives)

NCR NCO: Leads a squad of 4 troopers. Can be armed with the following weapons, Service Rifle, Lever-action shotgun, 10mm SMG, 10mm pistol, .357 revolver or Cowboys Repeater. Distinguished from other troopers by the Mantle Armour

NCR Sniper: A specialist in long range combat who operates either alone or with another Sniper as a spotter. Armed with sniper rifles they can easily eliminate selected targets at ranges beyond the detection range of the enemy. Wears face wrap armour with a beret

I only want a mod that rearms NCR better.

Probably you would like to hear about my idea of veteran troopers who are meant to fill a gap between the Rangers and the regular troopers. Veteran troopers are equipped with combat armour so that they can last longer in combat than the fresh recruits. The Veteran troopers would be initially rare in the game and would at first appear only at the Dam and Camp Macarren. However in the later half at the game especially towards the 2nd battle of Hoover Dam almost all regular NCR troopers would be replaced by Veteran troopers.

NCR Veteran Rifleman: A soldier who has survived more than 4 tours of duty and the experience has shaped them into dependable and skilled fighters who would hold the line in conditions that would make recruits break. Equipped with a Battle Rifle, 10mm pistol, 2 Frag Grenades, Flash Bang and a combat knife.

NCR Veteran Assault Trooper: Has seen many years of attacking fortified and entrenched opponents often under very heavy fire and is capable of keeping level heads in conditions that rookies would consider suicide. Their skill in close quarter fighting makes them more than a mach for most legionaries, and its a little wonder why most Veteran Assault Troops would eventually go on to join either the Special Forces or the Rangers. Equipped with hunting shotguns, Assault Carbines, 10mm or .45 Auto SMGs (.45 auto smg requires the honest hearts DLC) for range attacks and in melee they will use combat knifes, Hatchets and Spiked Knuckles. Some have even been to know to make makeshift knuckle dusters from the dog tags of their fallen comrades. They will also use various forms of grenades usually frag and flashbangs

NCR Veteran Marksman: A experienced sharpshooter who provides their squad the ability of targeting valuable targets at ranges that would be difficult for the rest of the squad. Armed with the Marksman carbine as their primary weapon and uses the 10mm pistol and combat knife as side arms

NCR Veteran Gunner: Many long years of service has molded this soldier into a steady and strong fighter who is easily capable of handling the recoil of automatic firearms, often many time is responsible for keeping the heads of hostiles down that would otherwise kill the gunner's squadmates. Armed with a Light Machine Gun makes frontal open assaults on these soldiers pretty much suicide for anyone not wearing power armour.

NCR Veteran Grenadier: Many years of experience with volatile explosives, has taught them the best way to utilized their equipment in the most effective manner during firefights.Armed with Grenade Launchers, various forms of high end grenades, 10mm pistol and combat knifes.

NCR Veteran NCO: A experienced leader who has the responsibilities of leading their men to complete their objectives and keeping them alive. Wears a mantled version of combat armour. Can be armed with a Battle Rifle, .45 auto pistol (honest hearts), .44 revolver, 45. auto SMG, or a Trail Carbine.

NCR Veteran Sniper: Many years of training in the art of long range marksmanship and experience in survival in the harshest of terrains has made this sniper something truly to be feared. Equipped with gillie suits allows them to disappear into the background without the usage of stealth boys. The veteran sniper would be for many Terrorists and Legion Centurions, the last thing they never saw. Armed with suppressed sniper rifles although some prefer the stopping power and reliability of scoped Hunting Rifles and Trail Carbines. You may sometimes find these snipers near Legion camps and Camp Macarren

Hmmm...I like the different "classes/roles" but I'm not exactly a fan of the "Veteran" Soldier concept. In the real U.S military, both new and veteran soldiers are equipped the same and kept in the same units. That way, the new can benefit from the experiences of the veterans and the veterans won't exactly stand out in the middle of a battlefield if everyone is dressed/equipped the same.

I mean, that "Veteran" soldier concepts works for Caesar's Legion since that's what the original Roman Legions use to do. But for the NCR army, which is more or less based on current military practices, it doesn't quite fit.

Well the problem for me is that the in game NCR Army does not look like a force to be reckoned with, which comes with the problem is that they are supposed to be the army that defeated the Brotherhood of Steel according to lore, however a single Paladin wearing Power Armour looks like something that can easily beat 20 NCR troopers, and that's the ratio of forces the NCR had against the BOS during the battle of helios one, which was a distaster for the BOS, and Helios 1 is a hard place to defend. Fore places that would have favored the BOS the NCR would of needed a more than 30-1 ratio to win. I have heard that in Fallout 2 NCR Soldiers were much better equipped than their FNV counterparts. There are mods such as NCR Rearmed that re-equipped the NCR with much better equipment making the NCR army a more formidable force however those mod too has lore issues as it makes the NCR too formidable when against fighting against Caesar's Legionaries even when the NCR is overstretched. While the NCR does has Rangers, the Rangers are not actually part of the Army and a good ranger like any special operator is an expensive investment and while they as good as a squad of troopers and perhaps in the case of the Veteran Rangers as good as an entire platoon of troopers, they are always not cost efficient and the loss of an elite ranger would be a waste of resources.

I'm not sure if you're aware, but HELIOS ONE was a pyrrhic victory for the NCR. The 20:1 ratio wasn't the number of forces, it was the number of casualties (75 for the Brotherhood and 1,500 for the NCR, if you're curious). The NCR were willing to throw thousands of men at that plant to win it and finally wipe out the Brotherhood - and the casualty count would've been much higher if the Brotherhood had chosen to hold the line.

The reason why it was a disaster for the Brotherhood and not for the NCR was rather more complex. There are well over a million citizens in the NCR, and their army numbers in the hundreds of thousands, whereas the Brotherhood's total forces were the 150 Paladins at that one power plant. The NCR lost a tiny fraction of their army - the Brotherhood lost half of their total forces. And unlike the NCR, they had no way of acquiring more.

Anyway, I would agree with a rearmament of the NCR, mostly to make them a more interesting faction. Not significantly more powerful, but it'd be good to see more variety in their soldier types.

Your number is a tad off: the NCR outnumbered the Mojave BoS 15:1, not 20:1, during Operation Sunburst. In any case, you still haven't made the case as to why these Veteran troops should be clearly marked out/stand out in the middle of the battlefield on dint of their special armor. You're effectively copying the Legion's military style/lore at that point and therefore making the NCR...less NCR lore wise. The NCR Rangers can get away with different armor on account of them being a totally different branch of the NCR military. 1st Recon is still part of the NCR Army and are allowed to have different armors but they're part of a specialized unit. These NCR veterans are still part of the main NCR Army.

I do agree that they need to be better armed. But dressing up the Veterans with a newer armor type is a bit much.

Personally, I would like to see NCR Army forces patrolling the Mojave as an actual squad and similarly equipped to the squads of modern militaries (adapted FNV weapons rather than RL weapons and using the U.S Army setup):

Squad Leader: Equipped with a Service Rifle

Fireteam Alpha

Team Leader: Equipped with a Service Rifle

Rifleman: Equipped with a Service Rifle

Grenadier: Equipped with Grenade Rifle

Automatic Rifleman: Equipped with a Light Machine Gun

Fireteam Bravo:

Team Leader: Equipped with a Service Rifle

Squad Designated Marksman: Equipped with a Marksman Carbine

Grenadier: Equipped with Grenade Rifle

Automatic Rifleman: Equipped with a Light Machine Gun
