BOSS report on fresh Steam install shows 'TES4Edit cleaning' errors

i searched for this problem and am surprised it didnt pop right up but ...

first time thru Oblivion. i ran into some game behavior problems after installing OBMM and BOSS and then popping in a few mods, so i started with a fresh Steam install (manually deleted entire common/Oblivion game directly)

- ran OBMM first, and all the 'official' steam add-ons were checked

- ran BOSS and it found TES4Edit errors (below)

on a brand new install of Oblivion, is this normal for these errors to show up in BOSS??

these mod tools are old-ish but im assuming they are kept up to date. are they all updated to properly process the latest Steam install? seems like we shouldnt have conflicts with official plug-ins like that ...

ugh

i hadnt even started the Oblivion game itself before the above post. now i tried to start the game and it immediately crashed - on what i thought was a clean Steam install

this is exactly the hassle i wanted to avoid with these mods. now what

does just starting BOSS and/or OBMM before launching the game now break the game??

gonna try uninstalling everything and reinstalling just vanilla Oblivion from steam. if that doesnt work i guess its system restore back to when the freakin game actually would launch. jeez

Hi Meathead,

I just happened to see your post, and it made me curious,so I came here to see what was up.

First of all, I'm no expert. However, I have read that most of the DLC from Bethesda does have dirty edits. It is recommended that you clean all of the DLC with TES4Edit, and also use all of the Unofficial Patch mods; not only for the game itself, but for the DLC as well, if you're going to use it. Doing this can help to avoid crashes.

What you do not ever want to do, is to try to clean the master file for the game. This can cause problems. Also, the Unofficial Patches have already been cleaned by their authors, so you don't have to worry about them.

If you've never used TES4Edit before, it's not overly difficult. I recommend watching some of the videos on YouTube. Gopher, a mod author on the Nexus, also has a very good video on how to use it for cleaning. One thing, though: Some people (Gopher included I think, depending on whether the video is up to date) will recommend that you use TES4Edit to change all your .esp's to master files. I really don't recommend that. Doing that is for 'advanced level users', not beginners! Another thing you should know about TES4Edit is that it comes in several flavors: TES4Edit, FO3Edit, and TES5Edit are all the same program, but named so that people who are playing different games can find it more easily on the Nexus. At least, I think that's a reasonable assumption why.

I would also recommend looking up the guide to using it. I'm pretty sure that's linked on the TES4Edit main page. The guide is quite outdated, but remains useful. The program is configured a little differently now, but still functions in the same way. Mainly, to access the filter menu, you now need to right-click on the file you wish to apply the filter to, and select from the context, or drop-down, menu.

TES4Edit can help with other things as well, but I don't want to go too far off-topic here.

I hope this helps, and I hope you can get your game running the way you want it without too much effort. Good luck!
