Malchik
The woman sighs. "To be honest I don't suppose much of it is true. It has been passed on by word of mouth through so many generations that the real events have been lost in th embellishments - or so I imagine. Anyway, 2000 years ago - so the tale goes - the people who lived on the island occupied everywhere outside the curtain wall. They were friendly with the occupants of the castle who used regularly to come into the village. There were just two of them - man and wife. Sometimes they had visitors staying. It all seemed very normal. Then she became pregnant. She was very proud of the fact. It was to be her first child." She sits beside you and adopts a more conspiratorial tone. "This was what first started to trouble the other inhabitants. She and her husband had talked of their children before. Perhaps the relative isolation of living in the castle was affecting their minds. But they shrugged it off and assumed that the earlier references to children had been those of others the castle occupants had cared for." She pauses to see whether you are still listening then goes on quickly. "When the child was due she called in the local miswife. Everything seemed fine but something went wrong. During the birth the woman must have damaged something inside. She started to bleed and no one could stop the bleeding. Her husband was beside himself and when it seemed all hope was lost he sent the midwife from the room with the child and said he believed he could cure her. Indeed a few hours later when the midwife returned the baby to the cradle by the bed, the woman was sleeping peacefully. For several days the midwife came and went to help nurse the child and the villagers were looking forward to seeing the baby. But neither woman nor child were ever seen in the village thereafter. Even the man stopped visiting." She shakes her head. "This does not sound so bad does it? But not long after, the midwife disappeared. She might have been staying at the castle but she had a young family of her own and would not have abandoned them without word. When the villagers asked at the castle they were told she had died of a heart attack and been buried in their private cemetary. It could have been true, though why did they not tell her family at once? Then the elderly gardener met the same fate. And then a young girl who went in to do the cleaning. After that nobody was sure what was going on and visits to the castle ceased. That was when the terror started. At night ghastly creatures would emerge from the castle and fall upon the villagers, killing and devouring them before they had a chance to defend themselves. Not that anything worked against them anyway, nor spells bought from the witches of Ooo, nor weapons, nor offerings to the gods. In fear of annihilation the villagers fled to the tip of the island and walled themselves in. And during the course of one day they sealed up the gate to the castle." She shudders, imagining the events. "It seems the creatures could not get over or through the wall. For many nights afterwards they could be heard howling but they never emerged. Eventually the noises ceased. And by now anyone or anything that had lived there must be long dead. All the same, no one wants to get nearer to the castle than the village wall - or rather where the wall was. It rotted away years back and no one has replaced it but the road follows the line of the old defences and no one strays beyond it." She grunts. "Quite how much is actually true I can't say but it is certainly grounded in fact. Maybe you understand our nervousness about that evil place, now." Lisnpuppy
Esha listens closely to the woman's story. She had heard similar stories long passed down in her family though not so complete. She looked around at her companions and wondered should they need to discuss the matter and then perhaps pay a visit to the castle area. This seemed to be the place where the evil began and may be where they could find some clues to the location of the Child.
macmert
Mac listenes to the story with interest, turns to the witch and says "I guess we need to take a look at the ruins just to be sure... There might be others looking for the child and we may need to hurry up on our search, I came from afar and I dont want to leave this island empty handed..." He speaks with a low tone so noone else hear his speech...
Malchik
OOC> Hi everyone. I am for the next 8 days heavily involved in the making of a short film called Face Value. I wrote it and will act a small role in it and am part of the production team too. My flat is being made over to be student accommodation and at one point I'll be off line for three days. For these reasons can I encourage you to visit the Drunken Alligator thread to let others know who you are and to discuss potential moves in case I can't get a quick reply. To help it along I will pretend your last couple of remarks were overheard. On topic At the mention of visiting the castle the woman blenches. "Oh don't do that. Nothing may live inside but the curse, disease or whatever may still be there. If you came out no one in the village would run the risk and would kill you on sight. But I don't know why I worry - there is no way in. The gate is firmly sealed and in any event only ever opened from within. The ground beneath is too hard to tunnel under and the walls too sheer to scale. And I believe there are old wards placed to prevent those who say they know magics to cast any spells too near. The best you can do is walk around the curtain wall. All but the north east corner can be accessed, though parts of the 'path' are dangerous. It is a rite of passage for our teenage boys to walk it - Prawli was the last about seven weeks ago. We encourage it as it helps to confirm nothing is trying to break in or out. Our girls sometimes go but most realise that female superiority does not need to be underscored so grossly. If you do decide to make the walk - which takes three days - speak to the headman Jalawalli. Then no one will mistake you for something coming from the castle. The only way to view the north east corner is from a boat. Ladeep hires boats if you know how to sail them. It takes most of a day to go one way so you'd be coming back in the dark. If you want to talk to any of these people, I can direct you."
Malchik
OOC> Hello there, I am in the middle of filming but I will be back in a couple of days. Can you decide where you want to go next. Thanks.
phawk69
"Where might we find this Ladeep? Sailing sounds like so much fun." She looks at her companions and nods toward their rooms after she has received directions. "It would be good to get a little rest before we begin," she states, as she heads to their rooms. Once the others have entered she introduces herself "I am T'skar, from Tagfier. As some of you have already noted, I do possess magic. Now, I think it is in order that those of you who have just joined us introduce yourselves so that we may work as a team." She waits for replies. Lisnpuppy
I am Esha...daughter of Eshanika...granddaughter of stone and Witch to our clan." Esha bows to the woman called T'Skar...lower than to Mac but not as low as she would to one of her clan. "Goddess Bless this Greeting" Esha held her hads out palms down to properly greet the woman. She realized that the others could not be expected to be knowledgable of her ways and that she must teach them. "I also believe dinner and rest would be welcome before we investigate this place of evil" As Esha said this she made a ward sign in the air to keep away evil spirts which may be about. Esha also had small magics but was not going to reveal this yet. "I am also wise with magical herbs and healing."
macmert
"I am mac, I come from afar" says Mac, gives a little nod to T'skar... "Other details about me are... details, not relevant to the matter at hand, suffice to say that I have capabilities that will help through the journey ahead of us" "You guys rest, I will take the first watch, you might never know what might happen in these lands, better stay awake then wake up dead..." Deleted269910User
A new face has suddenly appeared. A young looking woman carrying a bow, quiver and a backbag walks in and quickly decides to introduce herself;"I am Ritz, where I come from, is not important. What is important, is that currently, it serves my best interest to help you..." Ritz calmly takes a glance at the people around her and replies:"...My forte is the usage of bow and general awareness. I will carry my own weight and I expect everyone else will to do the same." She casually sits down, puts her backbag to the ground and grabs a drink from it.
Malchik
OOC> I'll hold off for one day to see if gman21 is ready to join. In the meantime T'skar has suggested you hire a boat. You should indicate whether you agree or if you feel either of the other names I mentioned above should be visited first. You can split up and agree to meet up later should you so wish but these deliberations should be held in the Drunken Alligator thread. X DLC X has posted about Ritz there so it is easy to find. If you are all happy to go straight out to sea I'll move you along tomorrow.
