batesmotel34
Okay, This computer has some serious issues: Saturday: Game doesn't work, fixed via disabling soundcard. Sunday: Game refuses to work again, fixed via re-enabling sound card and disabling it again. Today: Yet again, game refuses to work, Sunday's solution does not work. strange, huh? I will note now that Norton Antivirus had appeared to have disabled itself when I quit the game on Sunday night... What do you think this means? It might be worth checking the system event log to see if there is anything there that correlates with when the game hangs. I had a problem with my AGP 6600GT card in a number of games last summer since the card kept overheating. You should deinfitely check that if your card is AGP. I finally gave up on AGP all together and got a PCI/E motherboard and video card. The overhating problem seems to be an issue with indiivdual cards so you can probably return yours if that is the issue. I found out belatedly that I can do that with mine so will be doing so and will probably try the card in one of the older machines in the house. And of course you can keep an eye out for new drivers that may deal with Oblivion specific issues to be forthcoming from most vendors I suspect. RivaTuner may be the easiest way to montior the temp while you are running the game but there are other free utiliities that can give you the information as well. VaanicOne
Well, I'm currently debating with myself I if I should check the overheating, because afterall, I had this problem with all my games over the course of two different graphics cards. Unless, both cards were overheating. This is what I'll try now: I'll enable the sound card, wait for it to crash, reboot, disable the sound card, and hopefully it'll be fixed. Afterall, it worked on saturday...
Dilvish
Try physically removing the sound card from your computer. You should be able to play with the onboard audio. You seem to have isolated the problem to some incompatibility with the sound card. Just disabling it may not be enough.

When I was having overheating problems, it took varying amounts of time for each time it failed and it happened in multiple games but not in normal windows activity. The games I had the most problems with were Rome:Total War and Half-Life 2, but also had problems occasionally in Morrowind. The annoying thing was that it was highly variable so it was hard to pun down the problem. The overheating was also obscured by another problem I had when I first loaded the system with the chipset driver for the Via chipset on my old motherboard. It turned out that one of the VIA drivers (AGP one I think) was buggy with WinXP SP 2. It ran ok with SP 1 but would crash quickly with SP 2 in or out of games. The fix for that finally turned out to be was to install Win XP SP2 before installing the VIA drivers since that meant the Win XP SP2 AGP driver was used in preference to the VIA one. If you have a VIA chipset it might be worthwhile checking to see if you are using a Microsoft or a VIA AGP driver. You can check under Device Manager->System Devices. dc4bs
Also, check the driver version of the audigy sound card. I had some wierd issues with my "Audigy Gamer" in the past untill I got an updated driver at creative.com That cleared up problems I was having with several games at the time. One last thing is to try moving the sound card around into different PCI slots. I have NO idea why this will sometimes fix probles with sound cards, but it does, on rare occations, produce "miracle cures". It's not an IRQ conflict issue, but it sometimes ACTS like one causing the full system lockups... -dc4bs
