Just got DAO: Noob questions need answers.

I have played oblivion and fallout3 almost exclusively, and modded for oblivion almost exclusively. The only reason i got DAO was because of the new nexus and the fact I may have the oppertunity to expand my modding skills and capabilities. But i have a few questions about the game and modding.

1: Is this made by bethesda? I kinda forgot to pay attention to credits or not throw away the box.

2: Is the program used for modding anything like the Tes CS or GECK?

3: If it isnt, does it mean i have to relearn a completely different way of modding?

4: What exactly is the whole gamestyle like compared to bethesda's normals.

5: Is it multiplayer? What are the pro's and cons of that

6: General differences from TES to DAO?

Thanks,

be well, sleep well, fight well, live long.

Err probably best summed as "They are completely different games, completely different styles, completely different tools and not the same company at all" :D

Dragon Age is made by Bioware and is similar in style to most of their RPGs such as KOTOR, NWN, Baldurs Gate, etc.

Haven't played any... sad.. Well i can readjust.. Just hope it's not a pain modding it lol.

What do you think the best start up is? for an elf that is. I looked at human, their starting is way too out of my taste. I like how bethesda normally starts thing. As a prisoner lol. Morrowind = prisoner

Oblivion = Prisoner

Fallout3 = Prisoner in a way.

Build yourself up from nothing. I don't like how im all the sudden royalty >_<

Anyways, elf tribe or elf city deweller.

A bethesda game is about free roaming and never completing the main quest (and regularly a very weak main quest, plotwise). It's all about the big explorable world.

A Bioware game's strong point is plot, tactics and companions. They normally have a starter area or set of areas, then you gain access to a fast-travel map with 4-5 locations that you must visit and complete (there's normally 2-3 ways to complete each), tho you can complete them in any order. As you progress you'll gain companions who have their personalities and dialogue and most likely a personal quest (Ever used ruined tail's tale mod for oblivion? they're like that). Said companions will often bicker with each other, said conversations are normally rather funny. In most of these games you can directly control your companions as if they where your own.

Battle in DAO is about:

1) disabling big threats.

2) controlling mass of enemies from swarming you, by either position, tanking or a spell.

3) mowing through these foes.

There is also no multiplayer.

Modding is different, the toolset is different also. Your best bet for starting site for modding would be here or damods, for making mods, otoh, there's also the official toolset wiki.

There IS the bioware social site, there's a lot of info and mods there, but it is severely lacking in search/sort features for the moment.

As for your character:

Both dwarven origins, the human origin, and female city elf origins are normally regarded as the best/most interesting. Mage origin is not as good and this is agravated by the fact that any mage regardless of race starts the same way; male city elf is more cliche than the female one, and dalish, while having one of the most sound reasons for joining the wardens, is also the shortest and most railroaded origin. Don't shy out of the dwarves for them being dwarves, both of the dwarven origins are amazing.

Also, don't shy away from human for being born into royalty. Human origin is rather fun. No origin is going to give you any greater advantage once the game kicks in, so don't worry: you'll still have your chance to work your way up from nothing to greatness.

After your origin story, you'll pass to a shared and a little railroadish starting area, and then you'll be thrown to the fast-travel map.

Note that unlike TES or Fallout, your objective when leveling up is specializing your character. A warrior that splits points into sword & shield, bows and 2handed is going to have severe problems killing stuff. Pick a single style/role/weapon tree and stick with it. This is not true for mages however.

Well without giving spoilers all I can really say is that none of the origans start you off over powered and that each provides its own unique background that adds to the whole of the story, so IMO to see the full scope of the events unfolding you really need to experience each of the origans.

But this also comes down to your own preferances when roleplaying, I myself just cannot get into the dwarven story I tried but its not for me. I did however enjoy both of the Elven origans and the human noble origan as well. As for game play your best forgetting all you know about tes, DA plays alot like Baldurs gate and NWN.

Modding the game is going to depend alot on your own abilities as a modder, Currently most of the tools are still in development but they look promising. Your best bet there is to look over the wiki, the socailsites project list, Johns Blog, and of course right here. There are alot of great tutorials to be found to help get started. The toolset however is signifigantly different from what your going to be accustomed to from having modded tes.

I have found myself at times more then a bit puzzled at some things but others I have found that once I grasped the concept it was even easier then modding tes. Importing custom models textures and so on is possible but tricky http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/72/index/320619

I myself have not had any luck with this, but I know others who have so it has been verified to work.

anyway hope the links help and have fun
