Something got screwed up somewhere.

Recommended Posts

I had to disable my connection temporarily in order to prevent the computer from making contact with a questionable service. In XP, this is normally not an issue since you can disable and enable the connection within windows settings rather easily, but I had forgotten that Windows 7 uses the same setup that Vista has, in that any disabled connection can't be easily re-enabled. Although the computer detects the connection right away when you first make one, once you've disabled it, you can't enable it or make a working connection. I'm reminded rather quickly how much I absolutely HATE this system. As there didn't seem to be any alternative due to how windows can't seem to detect the connection again, even after plugging it back in, rebooting, ect, ect, I had no other option than to use a system restore.

As per usual, the system restore screwed up something somewhere. While I managed to restore my internet connection, firefox no longer works. When I try to load anything, all I get is an empty page. I've tried reinstalling, but have had no luck. Anyone have any ideas as to what the problem could be, or how to solve it?*

I'd also like to know if anyone has any suggestions as to how I can quickly disable my connection without having to pull the plug or go through this mess every time. Disabling my internet connection every now and then was something that I had to do frequently before, so would like to have some options.

*Got firefox working again by completely removing it from the system. Still need a way to quickly disable internet connection without screwing up everything though.*

Yeah, it's quite difficult. I'm not sure why they've done it.

The simplest way to me seems to place a shortcut of your adapter at your desktop. Which is at Network-Center->Adapter.

If that kind caused your problem I'd go for your firewall. I'd usually get my firewall to lockdown everything, which is a nice alternative..but not faster...most firewall-programs should have it, but I'm not sure though. It just disables any connection without disabling the adapter.

I don't have Windows 7, but since you say it's the the same as Windows Vistan I'll explain you how I do it:

- Go to Network Centre

- Click 'Diagnose and repair' (don't have English OS, so maybe it's not the same in English)

- Wait for it to 'diagnose' your problem

- Click the only solution which, in my case, is 'Enable LAN-connection adapter' (again, terminology might be different in English)

This always works for me, and I use it quite often. Actually I tried it while typing this message, so I was forced to type it completely over again because I lost connection. I'm dumb :D.

Don't know anything about Firefox. I suggest using google chrome as browser. Really fast, never crashes.

Unfortunately, that didn't do it when I tried. Said that it could not find a solution to the problem.

I use Comodo Internet Security which has a firewall system. To disable Internet/LAN access, I simply right-click on the white shield in the right-hand corner of the task bar and select Firewall --> Block All Mode

In WinXP, I also frequently disabled the LAN card to force the card to re-initialize the IP for troubleshooting purposes.

When I did the same thing in Win7, I also scratched my head as to where I could re-enable it. I found out how but I cannot recall the steps from memory...currently at home on sick leave taking care of my wife. If I remember this thread while at work, I'll see if I can document the process for you.
