I believe that it is a power received from the middle stone, that looks like the stone that holds a black book. It has the black shadow swirling around it. The power covers everything on my character, and when an enemy is attacking, the power also covers the enemy and draws health from the enemy. It just reminds me so much of the Black Books that you read. I should say the shadow that surrounds the Black Books. Hope that made sense. I cannot sneak near any npc's for it damages them. If I am walking or riding down the road, and there is an enemy, the shadow is suddenly there, and I am not in sneak mode when fighting an enemy.
