General question about Fallout 3's stability (crashes, etc.)

Hi, everyone! New to the forums. I've been a fan of Fallout 3 since it came out, however, having had no decent computer at the time, I've been playing the PS3 version pretty much all the way until last week, when I finally got myself a good new machine.

Since then I got the PC version, and immersed myself into the glorious world of mods, and I'm loving it very much!

 

Now, every once in a while, Fallout 3 will crash on me, freezes up mid game, forcing me to basically Ctrl+Alt+Del my way out of the game and having to restart from my previous save. This happens quite a few times per day, so I'd say around once every hour or so on average. I would say more frequently than my (also heavily modded) New Vegas.

 

My question is, does this happen because of the mods? Or would it still be happening if I played the umodded version? The reason I'm asking is because the PS3 version of Fallout 3 has been patched up to the point where it runs perfectly without having any kinds of game breaking glitches. (at least in the main campaign, don't get me started on The Pitt)

 

So I'm wondering if the crashes that are happening in my game are the result of one (or few) of the mods that I'm using, or if I would still be experiencing these crashes even without any mods.

The game can be made to run almost perfectly on a console. It is a set configuration and cannot be changed. Every console has a standard set of components and these do not change. Every XBox is the same, every PS3 is the same and just about every PC is different.

 

For the operation on a PC, the developers had to determine an average configuration that was available when the game was published. This being the case, it will run perfectly on some machines and not at all on others.

Don't want to jinx it, but so far, it seems the tips in that second link did the trick, enabling multi-core, I guess. Hopefully my lack of sporadic freezes was the result of this adjustment, and not just blind luck.
