Aren't all the video games virtual reality? you pretend like you are the character. Making it too realistic may destroy real life. If you had a choice between being a loser in real life or being a millionaire in fake one that feels like the real you would probably choose fake one.

If we by VR mean our games, their are several aspects to it.

I will start with the danger of brainwashing.

In wargames, war is allways glamoures, the hero never dies,

and in all campaing from "Nam" to Irak, you will see only the nice things.

You will for example never see a bunch of longhaired hippies protesting

against the war, or veterans that came home unpopular.

So you will be "told" that war is "clean" and heroic.

Then their is the good old kliche, that started already with the videos:

"The teenagers will become more violent with all that gaming"

Well, look around and count how many "school shooters" the world

encounters each year, and judge by your selves.

This does not nessecerely have to do with VR. Changes within society

playes a large role here to.

VR can also be a good refuge from daily stress. You can even live a better

live her.

I think of the on-line game "Second Life" wich has attracked many.

Here you can fullfill your dreams.

I cannot speak for all the world, but only for Denmark, when it comes to

addiction. We do have some addicted gamers here, and also places they

can turn to for help.

But one can get addicted to anything, having the psykological attitude for it.

Despite my harsh expresions on wargames, i think that VR is a nice entertainment,

especially in the fantasy world.

I would not be without it.

VR is meant to just be a retreat from everyday life events as a sort of stress-relief. The only way I can see it as bad is when people act out what they do in the video games or movies themselves (which I personally never do), or when they become so addicted to it that they are unable to pull themselves away from it and forget about everything else.

I'm sure that every well-off person knows that it's unreasonable to jump onto a helicopter from a 100 story building.

I would not be to shure about that. Trainsurfing, a risky sport amongst young people, must come from somewhere.

I didn't say everyone, just to clarify things. I mean the people who know better than to do careless things such as those.

(just italicised that part of my first post, btw)

Balagor, Thank you for that post. It's a rare and pleasant surprise to see something so extensively answered.

I personally do not believe that violence in video games corresponds with real-life violence to anyone. I play prototype about 1-3 hours a day and get nauseated thinking about a broken bone. And I have no urge to disembowel anyone I know.

(DISCLAIMER)

My dad plays it 1-2 hours a day and has a VERY strong urge to disembowel his boss.

(DISCLAIMER)

I agree with your point on war games. But then again, they are not made to be entirely realistic.

TO sum up my personal opinion, I think video games are only an issue if you have an INCREDIBLY addictive personality or are insanely stupid.

(what's train surfing?)

@jaosals42, A 14-year-old boy accidentally killed himself re-enacting a scene from HALO.

@Antonkr, Part of My question was, If you chose the fake life, would it be bad?

This is all irrelevant anyway, as I was talking more along the lines of V.R. as seen in [caprica/i].

Actually, A company believes the will have the first actual V.R. released in 2014.

Trainsurfing is for teenager daredevils. They clime on top of a train, preferable a fast one.

The competition now is to make the best video for YouTube, to see how long you can go, before you are either caught ore killed.

Please, don´t be inspired.

VR would be amazing cause as it is I am very disapointed with so many games bassed on things I could do as a 300 point over weight man with many health problems compaired to a very fit soilder trained to kill in game. It annoys the crap out of me the things you should be able to do that you cant. Such as fire an M16A4 on burst get a 3" grouping at 100 yards in game.

While in RL I shoot an M16A3 on burst and get less then an inch grouping at 100 yards. Just incase your wondering at an army range I qualified to be a sharpshooter but as I dont want to kill people for a living never joined.

and to adress the sillyness of games being related to kid death and murders. It IS connected but also has ALOT to do with the family. I was playing Halo when it first came out I am 20 now and so was my brother he is 4 years younger then me. Neither of us wanted to do anything you see kids doing today. Granted my brother when he first played killed all his teamates but he knew the difference between real life and video games.

While VR will be amazing for us older folk the younger kids will have to be watched and parented correctly. The difference between a good VR is next to nothing kids will think after they are done with the game that they can still do amazing things or are impossible to kill.

Its a very touchy subject but for me I would love it as I might finally have the realisim I want. I can finally jump over cars, kick doors open, use two pistols or two MP5Ks, throw my guns at the enemy, kick zombies away while shooting others, smack my teemates if they are being morons, have realistic accurecy, perhaps loose a little weight, jumps over an inch barrier that many games refuse to let you do, use real cover.

I just cant wait

Execpt for lack of physic excercise in real world, i can follow your point of wiev.

I am not against AI, i love it, i just have a bad habbit to pinpoint all the traps.

I even hope for the day we do not have a screen anymore, but a 9 x 9 x 9 feet

sphere of beams, making a 3D picture of the game (or whatever) so we can actually walk into it.
