Aegrus
I'm traveling to the Philippines in about 8 days to visit my girlfriend there. I'm really excited, she's wonderful and I can't wait to get there. However, I'm aware that there's a decent chance of pickpocketing. According to my girlfriend, (who was born there and has lived there her entire life), pickpocketing foreigners is common. Does anyone have any ideas how I can reduce my risk of being stolen from? If anyone has visited the Philippines before, any other random tips would likewise be appreciated. Edited May 14, 2014 by Aegrus
billyro
I haven't been to the Philippines, but I've been to places with similar pickpocket problems. My advice is to keep your valuables in a secure place on your body - don't put your wallet in your back pocket or the front zip of your bag. If anything, leave everything of value at the place your staying at (and lock up, of course) and only carry a small amount of money with you when you travel around. One of my best friends is Filipino, and sometimes he would talk about the Philippines, so I've got a fair understanding of what you could expect. If you want me to clarify on anything, just let me know and I shall. The most useful titbits I remember from him are that if you dress extravagantly, it'll make you a bigger target and more prone to mugging. Also, try not to use your phone in public because people will notice that.
