charlie1239
Hi I have decided to use my christmas money by upgrading my computer, I am getting a 750Watt power supply, to replace my 300watt right now. I currently have a nVidia Geforce 8600GS video card in my computer, and I wanted to know which card you would recommend me to get to replace this one. I would prefer to have a video card that raises my FPS i get during games like Fallout 3 or Oblivion. As long as I am able to play it in almost ultra high graphics, that would be fine. Thanks
gsmanners
It depends on your motherboard and how much you're willing to pay. For about $100 you can get a 9600. That should boost your speed a little bit.
minutegold
For about $100 you can get a geforce 9800gt which will a BIG improvement, big as in "It can max out every current game with no to 4x AA at 1680x1050." For about $150 you can get a Radeon HD 4870 which does the same at 1920x1200. BTW: Both cards will run fine with any current CPU and a 400-500W PSU. minutegold
The 8600gs is a PCI Express x16 card, so your motherboard will support any PCIe card. And to repeat/elaborate on my previous advice: The 4870 offers the best performance in it's price-class, ever; While the 9800gt(x(+))/gs 250 come really close and have the advantage of Nvidia's awesome drivers. gsmanners
The 8600 GS is a PCIe 1.0 x16 card. The best you can do (with a matching card) if your motherboard is PCIe 1.0 x16 is a 9400. This is not to say that you can't put a PCIe 2.0 x16 card into a PCIe 1.0 x16 slot, but it won't get the same kind of performance and some Intel chipsets will actually cause problems with that combination. This is why I said it depends on your motherboard.
charlie1239
well I was thinking of buying an ATI video card because I heard they run fallout better, and get rid of that little black square bug. Also my motherboard only has 1 video card slot, so I have to make it count!!!
