Migrating to Windows 7

I recently built a new machine with Windows 7. I have my current Oblivion game on a Windows XP machine. I'm trying to get the same setup on the Win7 machine as the WinXP machine so I can resume my current save games on the new machine, but I seem to be having trouble.

Here's what I've tried and here's what I've seen. I started by installing everything from scratch in the Win7 machine. I had read that I might have trouble under Vista/7 using mods if the game was installed under C:\Program Files\, so it's simply installed under C:\Games\Oblivion. I installed all of the patches and mods that I was using on the old machine, then moved over the save games. However, there appears to be problems. When loading the save game I got the warning about some content missing, but nothing seemed to be missing. I had all my gear and in-progress quests, so I didn't think much of it. That was until I started leveling too fast (I'm using OOO) and the merchants had the default behavior. As far as I could tell, OOO was installed properly, and at least the in-progress quests were still there, but other things seemed broken. So, I then tried doing a whole-sale copy-paste of my Oblivion folder from the WinXP machine to the Vista machine. Again, it ran just fine, but again it also seemed to have the same problems of some mods apparently not working. I still got the missing-content warning (which is very odd, since it should be the EXACT same install content paired with the save game) and OOO still seemed broken.

Is there something more I should know about Oblivion + modding + Win7 + migrating a save game from WinXP? Any advice is welcome. Thanks!

I transferred my game from XP to Win7. There was no problem. All of my mods were there, all of my saves were there.

I did a new install of Oblivion, then the Shivering Isles, then the SI patch. Then I installed the CLCs from the KOTN disk. Then copied my save game folder, Data folder and Oblivion.ini. Of course you will have to reinstall OBSE and OBMM

It started up and played fine - No missing mods messages or crash - Much fewer crashes in Win7.

You probably have already done this but make sure all of you mod files are checked in obmm or datafiles and make sure your load order is the same.

I tried a direct copy from one harddrive to a new one (vista to w7) and I messed it up so I just installed everything from scratch (luckily I still had all of the mods on my old hd). Also in w7 I had problems when I forgot to check the run as admin box in compatibility.

Which *.exe must be run as admin? Just OBMM, OBSE, or something else?

The "Missing Content" means you are loading a savegame which had an active .esp plugin when it was last saved which is no longer active while loading it up this time.

Using OBMM, you can use the "Savegame Manager" to look at your savegame and see all the active plugins that were running when you saved it. Then compare it to the plugins you have active right now to find the difference.

The process of moving your savegames will work on any machine but you must make sure all the same mods (and versions) are the same to avoid the "Missing Content" message. However, you do not "HAVE TO" have all the same mods loaded. Some are required such as race mods that your character is built upon, others are not necessary such as texture replacers and such.
