Windows 7 GECK file Saving Problems

Recommended Posts

I got Windows 7 Ultimate recently after my harddrive crashed, The problem is that when ever I wish to Edit or tweak with the files in the GECK, it wont let me save it. Says Access Denied, even on my previous Mods I created before my Harddrive crash!

This is stopping me from creating any more Mods in the future and I really wish to resolve this ASAP.

I can create new Saves/Plugin files, but I cant locate them in my Data Folder, they only show up in the Load Master/Plugin Files list. I tried to locate them in the hidden folders but the cpu says they do not exist.

Whats going on here? Windows 7 is doing wonders for cpu performance, I even got 64 bit from 32, tho Dunno what that exactly means, I get its a good thing havng 64 bit. Its just not letting me make my own personal tweaks and hanges to mods.

Is it something to do with Administrator Access? I cant access most files without running As Administrator, its flipping bothersome. No body else uses me cpu except me.

Help anyone?

E.g: When I try to save my Gary Invasion Mod it says this:

MASTERFILE: Unable to complete operation due to failiure removing previous file.

Plugin 'Data\Gary invasion - Hard.esp' may be locked or read only.

Temp file' Data\Gary invasion - Hard.tes' Contains saved data.

Context: DEFAULT

"Yes to all" will disable all Warnings for this context..blah blah blah...

Is the saved file in some Temp Folder in witch I cannot locate? Please help!

Did you check the properties of the .esp to see if it was indeed locked or read only?

And is Fallout3 installed to "program files"

If you installed FO3 and GECK to the default location in the Program Files folder, your problems are most likely due to W7 protection of the contents of the Program Files folder. As you are modding, the best solution is to uninstall GECK and FO3 and install them to a location outside of the Program Files folder, such as C:\Games\Fallout 3.

Yes I did check to see if the files were readme only ones. They is not. And Ill take your advice Mr. Zumbs as the protection thingy sounds bout right. Cheers for the help.

Cannot play Fo3 without having me own tweaks to the gameplay.

Ill keep you updated on how it goes.

Sweet! It works!!! Cheers my man! You saved my hide as well as My Sanity! Twas driving me Insane. Oh, didnt have to uninstall Fo3 nor GECK. Just made a new Folder in C drive called Games and moved the Bathesda Softworks into it and Bingo. All Works well now.

Woooo! Oh happy Day. Thanks Zumbs! Woo! Modding time!!! :D

Just moving the files may give you trouble later, as the location of Fallout 3 is remembered by the registry. If you have mods installed, you can, however backup your Fallout 3 folder, uninstall, reinstall, overwrite and get the same configuration (remember to ask FOMM to export your load order).

  • 1 year later...

Ok another way to do it without reinstalling is by doing what ZombieUK did by click and drag to the Games folder.. and following that if you are lazy to reinstall or something..

i'm not sure whether this works but ill still state it here...

search regedit

it should appear as programs...

then collapse HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

then collapse SOFTWARE

find Bethesda Softworks

then right click on the game you are transferring click modify

then enter the latest directory

It should work...

this changes the registered directory to the desired directory...

i hope ZombieUK didnt reinstall... XD
