Yet another ad virus

I don't know what the deal is with the ad provider used on Nexus, but they seem to be a feeding ground for trouble. I have had more ad-based browser attacks this week and both of them have originated from the ad in the attached image. Those have happened twice, and each time I get messages about Adobe 8.1 having a fault, my browser hangs, and on one of the instances the malware actually managed to cause my Anti-virus service to bomb (at which point I yanked my net connection killed my computer and went through a full viri/malware scan).

I know you need ads to help fund this site, but perhaps a more reputable provider that doesn't let all this junk through is in order? I really appreciate the service that Nexus provides, but these kinds of ad-based attacks really soil the site.

Cheers,

Vaul

Edit: in retrospect... "Virus" might not be an accurate term for the subject. My anti-virus hadn't gotten to the point of detecting a threat, but the ad is definitely trying to kick off some scripts to do things it shouldn't. Likely an attempt to load some spyware or trojan, but I guess the firewall and security updates on my machine keep it from getting that far.

usually simple tracking cookies get installed when you view such an ad which will then transfer the data about sites you visit to the content provider and allow it to show you ads that fit your surfing behavior (usually easy to remove with, for example, "spybot search and destroy")...

sadly our jurisdictions have yet to make the point clear that this is basically damage of private property or something along those lines as my private property gets attacked and manipulated without my knowledge or consent and furthermore does my internet speed become slower due to all that annoying cookie communication traffic and hence slims the ability to enjoy the service i bought from my isp drastically... criminal i call that...

what annoys me about this is that i need to have cookies activated if i don't want to retype my username and passwords all the time and henceforth i am unable to simply block these "attacks"

what i find astonishing tho is that these ads somehow seem to get payed for by someone, all i ever felt when getting bombarded or attacked by vicious ads is disgust and the result of that is that I'm definitely not going to buy anything from those crooks...

yup, I just got nailed by that fake viruscanner crap in the Dragon Age nexus.....some filthy pecker needs to be loraina'd!!

fortunately, I have "hijack this" and it didn't get a foothold, unlike my xp machine, poor thing, barely knew what hit it.

anyways in all seriousness could somebody screen those friggen' ads??

Problem is, the people who buy the ad space put up a legit ad with no viruses/malware, and after a couple of days, switch it with one that DOES have viruses and malware. So screening them first and making sure it's legit might not work forever.

  • 2 weeks later...

Had the same problems.

I recall the poll on the site, asking if people would rather use the Nexus or for example, Bioware's own community and I thought, why would anyone want to use the poorly organized developer website. Well now it kinda makes sense... >.>

I also got hit with the false malware scan message. I have Microsoft Security Essentails which alerted me to the site. They said this site has been reported as a malicious site that tries to learn your identity and passwords. I think Dark0ne should look into legal action against the sites that are allowed to advertise on the Nexus that do this. Like jaysus says it is a breach of contract. It is their resposibility to make sure their ads are virus and trojan free. I don't know about you but this isn't the first time this has happened. I really want them to do something. I don't like the idea of getting my new laptop infected with some sort of spyware. I hope no one else has any problems with this.

I keep getting hit with virtumonde. First time removing was a bit of a headache, but now thanks to the SOB's putting out the infection, I have become very adept at removal. Would recommend anyone that has seen any messages to find SOMETHING to do a reliable scan. SSD find it and successfully removes it in safe mode, and Malwarebytes Antimalware gets it too. For those that aren't familiar with this trojan, it will delete mbam.exe upon infection, and on installation while infection exists. bleepingcomputer.com has wonderful removal instructions and a bypass for the problem with installing mbam.exe
