zach610 Posted June 6, 2014 Share Posted June 6, 2014 (edited) I've been playing oblivion for many years now, and I've been having this problem from the beginning. I've learned to live with it, but I'm starting to get sick of it now to be honest. I'm experiencing CTD after about 5-10 cell changes. These are only when interior cells are included, meaning that wandering around outside in an exterior cell has never caused a crash. I'm not able to repeat a specific crash, meaning that I don't think that it's a specfic mod conflict; It seems to be a memory leak or something of that nature that occurs when I've made my computer load too many different cells. These crashes only take place during load screens (most commonly during changing interior cells, and fast traveling). Once I restart the game, then I can enter cells again for a while, until I do so about 5-10 times, then the game crashes. My computer specs are fantastic, with 8 Gb of RAM, I have a large texture pack installed, and quite a few mods. I don't ever experience lag really, only frequent crashes. I think the weirdest thing is that it's not a particular problem with certain cells (seen commonly in mod conflicts), it happens all the time once I load too many different cells. Then I reload the game, and can get into that area perfectly fine...but within another 15 minutes I am sure to get another CTD on a loading screen. Thanks in advance for any help, guys. The game crashes because it cannot load it all into memory. If you have a 64 bit system then get the 4 gig patch from http://www.ntcore.com/4gb_patch.phprun the patch but only select oblivion.exe...not the obse loader.exe. TRhis will help, also if you havent got it use oblivion stutter remover and set the heap at 400 -1000, trial and error I am afraid.This should help, it did wonders for my game. I think that very well might have done it! I already had Oblivion.exe patched with the 4gb patch, but I realized that I had never installed the stutter remover (I meant to...seems I forgot, and thought I did already have it installed). Well, I tried it without using the replace heap function, and that didn't help. I tried enabling the heap function and setting it to 800, still no luck. Finally, I set the heap value at 1000, and for some reason it works like a charm where other values did nothing. I figured I'd give it a "stress test", so I fast traveled all around the map like a madman, went into many interior cells, ran around in the wild a bit (just to make sure everything is still stable)...and no CTD. I'm not exactly sure what this heap function does, but appreantly it helps quite a bit for me. Thanks, discovery1. EDIT: I've been really testing it out to make sure my problem is fixed, and I believe it certainly is! During my time before these new settings a loading screen would have the red bar that would load maybe about half way, then freeze for a about 3 seconds, and an instant CTD (black screen). Well, during my time running around with these new settings and mods, I came upon a few loading screens that would have most likely caused a crash. The red bar loads up a little bit, then it stops for about 2 seconds just like before, BUT now it continues loading after that brief pause, and everythings fine. mickg1 Posted June 24, 2014 Share Posted June 24, 2014 Yuk - I thought it was just me. Game froze trying to enter Anvil a couple of weeks ago. Occasionally froze at other city gates. Tried COC Center and most of it cleared up, except for Anvil. Had to go back 3 levels to find a save that allowed me into Anvil, which is a month at my leisurely rate of play. Guess I don't go to Anvil much. Since then I have to check for the problem after each save which is a pain, and it happens once in a while, with no obvious common factors. I can sometimes force it to happen by jumping back and forth between cities a few times. I read around and picked up the 4GB patch and Stutter Remover. Just learned about the Heap setting on this thread. I'll give that a shot and post back here on whether it worked for me. Since it got worse at higher levels I wondered if I might have filled up the world with too much junk for the save file to hold. discovery1 Posted June 24, 2014 Share Posted June 24, 2014 Corruptesd saves can give bad stuttering, recently i wanted to visit suicide falls to check up on some flora i was game testing. I could not get more than 5 fps where i previously had 30- 40. As it hapened my hand was forced, i picked up some malware which ate my documents and inevitably all my game saves, oblivion, morrowind and skyrim. Fortunately all the game root folders are on a SSD which escaped damage. Ok so started my character all over again, after 24 game hours went back. To suicide falls...no problems back up to speed. I had about 500 game hours and about 2400 saves but i only wander these days, dont fight dont quest just wander... Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
mickg1 Posted June 25, 2014 Share Posted June 25, 2014 I came across a specific action that consistently causes me to crash trying to enter Anvil afterwards. I have 2 sets of armour, my companion carries the spare set. I started with a clean save. Then I opened my companion's inventory, moved my Crusader armour into it, and took out my glass armour. Then I immediately travelled to Anvil, and crashed trying to enter the city gate. After some experimenting I realized that it only happened if I moved my Crusader armour while I was still wearing it. If I unequipped it first, then moved it, I could go to Anvil and enter the gate with no problems. I did it both ways several times, with the same results each time. Then I noticed that doing this caused some other hiccups. The Crusader boots give an Effect called Woodland Grace. If I moved the boots out of my inventory without taking them off first Woodland Grace stayed active. I think the same might have happened with other Crusader item Effects, not sure about that I'm just going on vague memories of stuff that didn't make sense at the time. Also when I had the city gate problem in the past the numbers in my Skill Book got scrambled at the same time. I've had the same scrambling a couple of times in the past and had to reinstall the Skill Book mod. Maybe this is related. Several of the Crusader armour Effects involve skill boosts. I've had no problems since I started unequipping my armour before moving it. I played for several hours yesterday after I figured this out. It might only happen with Crusader armour. Or it could be just one item, or enchanted armour, or any armour, or any clothing. I don't have the energy to chase that down. After I started getting the city gate crash I had to go back 3 levels to find a clean save, which was the first save after a level-up. After the restart I went through to the start of the next level before it happened again. Thinking back, I generally put on Glass armour after leveling up, then go back to heavy armour after I get enough skill points in light armour. So it is likely I only do the thing which causes my problem right after a level up. It all seems to add up now. Odd as it seems I'm confident that moving armour which you are wearing at the time can lead to the city gate crash. maredark3d Posted August 25, 2017 Share Posted August 25, 2017 (edited) I guess must be a Vramburst stuff as what discovery1 said, I had a ATI AMD 9850, dd5, the game works very well with all visial options on high and with a lot of mods, the only crashes where due compatibility betwen mods, once I let just "essential mods" and take off heavy script mods, the game works without problems. Then my video card died and now I got the old video card what is a Nvidia 9500 GT, I installed Oblivion again, install some mods, this time even more simple mods, but my game crashes a lot, so I'm pretty sure must be the video card what does not have proper features.Would be good to know what video card do you have, If you have a low end video card maybe that is the cause of the crashes, seems does not matter how much tweaks and improvements you do to the game, that is what happening to me, when I could I will get a better video card and I'm pretty sure the crashes must be solved.A suggestion try to play the game without mods, or with really simple mods (no heavy or heavy script mods) and see, If your game crashes even with a simple setup with simple mods of the game, I'm pretty sure must be the video card.I hope the crashes problems get solved for anyone,is terrible spend a lot of hours setting up the game, adding mods and tweaking it, to then see does not work. *Update: I discover CM Parnters destroys the game, so I uninstalled it, I made a backup of .ini files. then verify cache of the game on Steam, some files downloaded, and use the backup of the .ini files (those on documents/mygames/Oblivion and those on Data installation game), I did that last thing to not lost my config, and now the game works without crashes :smile: (or less) Edited August 25, 2017 by maredark3d Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
