A PSU question.

Recommended Posts

I haven't been in the computer building scene much over the last two years, so I'm not entirely up to date on particular components and can't comment on the actual power suppply. That said, it does have 2x6pin plugs (They're used for some PCI-E cards).

Newegg's always good for research

A word of advice though: a PSU is not something you want to skimp on. If it goes, likely its going to take more of your system with it. This power supply could be perfectly good, but I would make sure to check out some reviews (in general, for all PSUs) before you buy it.

Johnny Guru Does some pretty indepth testing of power supplies. Its a good place to start looking.

don't go cheap on PSUs hun, especially when you are going 500W or above, it's not smart...talking from experience, I've seen enough brand new 650W PSUs pop the minute they are turned on because someone wanted to save $30. Believe me, it's worth the extra $30 after all the garbage you have to go through to return it...and if you can't return it to the retailer you bought it from...oh boy..ergh.

It's best to spend the extra 15-30 dollars for a Thermaltake, Antec, or Corsair PSU over a less known brand. Granted, Gigabyte makes great motherboards, I only buy them ASUS or Biostar, but I don't know much about their other products. There's a reason it has the same specs as the Thermaltake for example, but it's cheaper.

The matter of a PSU fitting really isn't an issue unless you have some monster crazy huge CPU cooler. PSUs are all ATX, cases are all ATX. Most PSUs are all the same size, except for the little ones for HTPCs and the like. BTX exists, but that's only if you have a low or mid-range Dell :P And ya won't be finding parts for it on newegg haha...you'll be paying Dell triple as much

Most come with two 6 pin PCI-E connectors...what you have to look at is how many amps the 12V rails take, and how many rails it has. Cheaper high watt PSUs that I've seen have 2 or 3 12V rails (which is good) but the amperage is so poor it would fail/die easily if you had a high end graphics card and CPU in it.

The Corsair CMPSU-850TXEU supports 70 watts on the 12V rail, wich is quite sufficient, even on a major rig.

It also provides protection against powerfaileur, owerpower, shortcutting and insuficcient power.

During the 10 years i have builded gamerps´s, i have had troubles with many brands of PSU´s,

exept for the past 4 years with Corsair. This really is a reliable PSU, and also one of the most silent ons.

(I am not a stockholder in Corsair lol)
