A Real Ghost Ship

The Flying Dutchmen is a sailing legend.

A ghost ship that if you see it (usually during a storm while rounding the Cape of Good Hope)

it's an omen. A VERY BAD omen.

This is an excerpt from the legend:

She was an Amsterdam vessel and sailed from port seventy years ago. Her master’s name was Captain Hendrik van der Decken. He was a staunch seaman, and would have his own way in spite of the devil. For all that, never a sailor under him had reason to complain; though how it is on board with them nobody knows. The story is this: in doubling the Cape they were a long day trying to weather the Table Bay. However, the wind headed them, and went against them more and more, and Van der Decken walked the deck, swearing at the wind. Just after sunset a vessel spoke to him, asking him if he did not mean to go into the bay that night. Van der Decken replied: 'May I be eternally damned if I do, though I should beat about here till the day of judgment.' And to be sure, he never did go into that bay, for it is believed that he continues to beat about in these seas still, and will do so long enough. This vessel is never seen but with foul weather along with her.

(Ah, just realized I hadn't made the tutorial. I'll post it soon.)

Okay, here's the tutorial.

In order for this to work you need two things,

1. A NiAlphaProperty branch in the NiTriStrip that needs to be 'ghosty'

2. A transparent texture

First, you need a mesh that has that property on it so you can copy it over

(Yes, you can probably add it yourself, but we know for sure that this way works)

So, extract the 'blacksapstoragetank01.nif' and the mesh(es) that you want to your

desktop and open it. Click on the NiTriStrips until you see the glass dome mesh's wireframe.

Now, under that find the NiAlphaProperty, right-click and choose 'Copy Branch'

Now, open the .nif that you want to apply it to, in my case the dragon statue.

Select the correct NiTriStrip, right click and choose 'Paste Branch.' The mesh

should become dark and somewhat transparent.

Save it now.

Now, we need a texture. This next part we owe to L33Nexus for figuring out.

For the dragon statue, it's texture is called 'AKDragonStatue.dds' extract it

and it's normal map, 'AKDragonStatue_n.dds.'

Now, open the file in GIMP. Choose Layer > Transparency > Color to Alpha

http://i816.photobucket.com/albums/zz84/zprospero/Tut006-1.jpg

Click on the "From: *color* to alpha" and set all of the boxes to 0.

You should get this. Save it.

Now, I won't go into detail on these parts, set the texture and put

it into the correct folders in the Data directory, and then open the CS.

Create an new activator and assign it your new statue's .nif file.

It has to be an activator to place a script on it.

The script is simply this:

scn aaaTestScript

Begin GameMode

pms effectParalyze

End

I find that the effect+*spellname* shaders work best, you can try

any you like, but I chose paralyze because it's slightly green.

Place it somewhere in the world, and go look it at then.

It will look, somewhat, like this:

It flickers, so the above is about as bright as it will get on it's own. I would recommend

adding a lot of mists and preferably a thunderstorm to get the best effect, as the flickering

would really enhance the creepiness of stormy weather.
