overlord118
Not sure if this is spoilers, but more seeking advice. What are good combat techniques against the following scenarios:1. Single magic users?2. Dual-wielders?3. Multipe attackers?4. Two-handed weapon users? I have a lvl 14 khajit thief, but get creamed against multiple after shooting one from afar. The archery doesn't really help against the other types much. TIA!
madcow12
kinda depends on the combat mod and ai mods that you use, so i will write from my skyrim experienceFor dual wield, since they can't block your attacks, it's best to go up with a sword and shield. block or bash and hit, block and hit, rinse and repeat. slowly eat away their health for multiple attackers, if possible draw them towards the nearest guards or group of neutrals you can hope will join in the fray, and circle around and hit them while doing your best to not get encircled. you have to keep moving two hand is a bit easier. just gotta watch for their power attacks. watch their attack animation because since two handed weapons have slow attack speed, you can slightly pull back when they perform their attack animation, then step forward, land a strike or two, then pull back again for magic, it's best if you have the appropriate resistance, but even if you dont just kite them with your bow from behind cover
disastrox3
Most of these things can easily be combated by a shield. If you wield only 1 sword and have either a really good shield or spellbreaker, none of these things are a problem. There is a perk that stops arrows that hit you when your shield is raised. So if you were to use spellbreaker & have good block skill, you've already eliminated magic users and archers from hurting you, and when you get close range, you just bash them with your shield and it stuns them. Then you can go in for the attack with your sword/axe/mace. As for 2-h weapons, they attack considerably slower so you'd be able to see their power attacks coming. What I usually do is power bash them right before they hit me with a power attack; it stops the blow completely, staggers and stuns them. I would also look into conjuration -- being able to summon wrathmen, atronochs, and other joyous things saves you from blows against multiple opponents. Exyll
Well if you're khajit, wouldnt you want to sneak attack with bow and then slip away? This increase both sneak and archery in nice chunks I found. In the beginning it can be very dicey, but towards the end you'll be one shotting dudes soon enough, and the ones who dont die in one you can avoid in all but the most lit areas.Takes a while but (imo) so much fun and worth it. Therefore10123
If I were playing a THF, I would avoid large groups, sneak backstab single targets or pick them off one by one. Face to face combat would be a bad idea till range was leveled up. Also would depend on type of THF. Plus rune spells to set traps and distractions. dubbad29
1. Mages rarely wear armor, so a well-placed arrow shot from hiding will do the trick. If you find yourself confronting a mage, particularly at a low level, try strafing (this doesn't work well on shock mages however) and running away. Only a ward or Spellbreaker will consistently let you get close enough to a spellcaster to smack them upside the head. 2. Dual wielders are fast, and your approach to them should vary based on your play-style. As with most situations where you're pitted against a melee opponent, range is your friend. One of the only NPCs in Skyrim that consistently dual-wields is the DB assasssin that sometimes comes your way. These assassins are awful, as you can see them coming from a mile a way. Snipe them with a bow or frost spell if possible (frost will slow them down). If they do manage to get up in your business, heavy armor is your friend; the daggers that NPC is carrying will have a hard time getting through it. But, if are wearing light armor, your best bet for surival is timing. Make some distance between you and your opponent by sprinting in the opposite direction. They will approach you and wind up for a power attack. The key is knowing the swing-speed of your weapon. Time your power strike to land just before their strike hits you. Daggers are easiest to time because they have the fastest swing speed, but maces have the highest chance of a 1 hit KO. It's tricky, but it's one of those things that helps Skyrim be more skill based as a game than stats based. 3. Taking on multiple enemies is a dangerous situation, especially if you're facing a variety of combatants. Firestorm, one of the master destruction spells, is great, but by the time you're that powerful of a destruction mage, 4 or 5 enemies should not pose a threat. One strategy for low level players to face bigger groups is to use followers/ hirelings. Lydia is great, since you get her at an early level, and she packs a good punch. Plus, for every follower you have, that's one less enemy that's focused on you, since they'll be engaging your follower instead. You can also investigate illusion magic. Lobbing a Fury spell into a pack of enemies will thin them out pretty effectively. Also, using a Fear spell (which costs less than Fury to cast) can reduce the number of enemies you're facing by one for about thirty seconds. 4. Daggers, daggers, daggers. 2H weapons are slow, especially hammers. You can land a full triple power attack (both mouse buttons together) before they finish drawing their weapon back. Athis tells Torvar the same thing on a daily basis. If you need to get out of the way, a quick forward roll will do the trick, assuming you have the perk. This puts you behind your opponent and allows for a free hit. Hope this helps! dubbad

Juranas
Against a single magic user: use a paralysis poison on a bow and shoot him once he drops his ward. Even if it's a 1 sec duration, by the time he has climbed back to his feet you can close the distance. In fact, as a low-level thief-assassin paralysis poisons are your friend. Canis Root and swamp shrooms can be gathered easily near Morthal and the results are awesome. Land a paralyzing strike, shoot/whack them until they get up, then use more poison. As far as multiple attackers, I'd suggest obtaining at least the first word for the Ice Form shout. Best group crowd control you can get at your level. elderout
My character is illusion+conjuration caster Fighting #2, #4 NPC just simple with conjure atronach and flee.Fighting #3 NPC is cast the fury or frenzy >>> finish them with atronach or raise a dead body. Fighting #1 NPC is the most hard fight. Raise a dead body just for reduce necromancer material, it cannot kill any magic user beside novice class. If you have lightning atronach. Try to cast near the mage. Mostly, the atronach will use the melee attack and drain the mage's magicka at the same time.(no magicka for heal) If you don't have lightning atronach and fight fire/ice mage. Cast the same mage's element atronach(ex. fire mage, cast fire atronach) the mage will use melee attack. Wait about he/she lost half or 2/3 health, spam your most powerful attack to finish him/her. :psyduck: If you don't have lightning atronach and fight lightning mage. Use the ice atronach for tanker and any tactics you can. Finally wish you luck. For your thief, you must have a weapon skill + some trick skill.(alchemy or one of spell skill not alteration, restoration)Most thief skill is not for combat.(sneak, speech, lockpick, pickpocket,) Edited July 19, 2014 by elderout
ponyboy10
Khajiit assassin-type here too. Definitely work on your stealth and sneak attacks to get those perks. The sneak-archery boost is nice, but the backstab will really allow you to take down enemies easily. Do your best to stay hidden. Be patient, and don't be afraid to run. When in combat, I would always have to remind myself to always stay moving. You can see most attacks coming, so make sure to strafe or drop back out of distance. I would usually be able to take down most melee attackers this way. Archers and magic users were always the worst for me until I built up a decent magic resistance. For archers, you can still avoid being hit by keeping moving too. Also, in general, the vanilla game at least is almost comical in that enemies will forget you just hit them if you can hide again. This is often helpful to take someone out with your bow from a distance. I would play using a dagger in my main hand and a spell in the other (either healing or a good destruction spell). Once a fight devolved into a melee affair, it would be time to take out a good sword or war axe I kept around for bigger damage. For the most part now, I just stick with my dagger unless a huge brawl breaks out, then just conjure a bound sword. Edit: like was mentioned above, conjuration is not a bad secondary skill to have. You can summon something to take the attention away from you in fights. They can be frustrating if you're doing a stealth play-through, but followers can be helpful for this as well. Personally, I've strayed towards magic a little more, but Illusion and Alteration can also be helpful to make you harder to detect, calm enemies, or for armor bonus spells.
