File rating system.

Hello

I've been using the nexus sites for quite a while now and I love to give a file a rating once I've played it, the only problem is the "new" scoring system (thumbs down/thumbs up) isn't as good as the old scoring system (1 to 10). Let me explain,

Basically, once you've downloaded a file you need to wait three hours (I think) to give the file a rating, this is so the person who has downloaded the mod has actually played it. This is good and all but I normally forget to rate the file, thats why I think the time until you can rate the file should be much shorter (around half an hour) or maybe the files creator can set a time limit.

Also, the new (well, it's been around a while now) thumbs up/thumbs down system doesn't work well in my opinion, this is because it doesn't give the file an accurate rating so nexus users won't be sure too about the file.

So, my suggestion is to make a new rating system, possibly a bar that you can drag to give the file a rating of 0 to 100% and a reason why you gave it that score, or even the old 1 to 10 rating system.

Thanks for reading, I hope my idea comes into reality.

half an hour is good for some mods, yet others wouldn't. To keep it fair in general an average has been given. Besides, if you think you'll forget to endorse just use the notifier that's build in :).

1 to 10 was really a bad system as either you would get a 1 or a higher than a 7 and some that don't know just go for 5.

In the end all would end up at 9. something which doesn't give a good rating. As the average could be messed up by a couple of serious of 1 rating votes.

I think the endorsement system does work, as if it wouldn't you can directly view why a mod is not endorsed as most give an explanation what's wrong with it, same for endorsements. I don't think percentages would make any difference from the 1 to 10 systems, maybe just more variety as one give a 44% rating..but still not give any accurate info at lists and will get stuck between 90-100%. The extra of endorsements is that there is a new order of recently voted files of the past 2 weeks. Something any percentage/1-10 wouldn't set really accurate, just the amount of votes would..which is basically the amount of endorsements.

Setting the time yourself sounds nice, but I doubt anyone would fill it in appropriately and I bet they'll just select the lowest one.

As has been suggested before, if you're really concerned about the quality just write a review! Most modders allow topics to be created at their discussion or otherwise you could link to it. A really awesome feature is that if there was a tab for reviews.

Hi,

Thanks for the post. I suppose there was a few flaws in the 1 to 10 system but maybe it could be brought back and be combined with the endorsment system, for example, there could be an overall percentage score (1 to 100) and next to it could be the endorsement system. Say if a file had 10 thumbs down and 40 thumbs up the overall percentage would be 80%. I will think more into this idea soon, but I have to go for dinner now.

Thanks again for the response.

The ratings are nothing more than a popularity contest no matter if it is a 1 thru 2 or 1 thru 10 vote...that is all it really boils down to.

From the standpoint of a passer-by that wants to know if a mod is good or not, there are many ways to tell:

  1. Is the mod in the area/category of interest to you (such as an armor mod)
  2. Was the mod created by a favored author of yours
  3. What kind of feedback exists in the comment area
  4. How many times has it been downloaded vs the date it was released
  5. How many people have taken the time to come back an give the mod a thumbs up
  6. What kind of activity is in the Action Log which shows when and what updates were made (automatically)
  7. Is the description / readme clear about what it does and what problems have been found
  8. What search tags have been set to describe the contents of the mod in detail
  9. Files of the month listing
  10. Peoples personal favorites listings found in various forums and topics

From the standpoint of an author, I think the comments section contains the absolute BEST source of feedback if reviews of the mod are given (likes, dislikes and line of thinking or perception)....one also should understand that this requires wading through a bunch of non-helpful comments as well. It also depends on what the author is looking for too....are they sharing out of the kindness of their heart, are they looking for popularity, download counts, trying to improve their skills, giving back to the community, meeting new people, etc.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

I suppose the voting system is all to do with popularity, I've seen a few files a while ago where people have actually made new accounts just to give themselves a good rating, this was a major flaw in the previous file rating system. Now that you guys have explained it much more clearly and given me some pros and cons of the new system I suppose I can say that the new system is much more efficient and usefully than the previous one. Thanks for replying guys,
