ok, so ive been looking at various tutorials for installing mods on the internet and ive tried pretty much everything and no matter what i do i still have those yellow exclamation marks in game, i unzip everything to the data folder, i check what i need to check, and nothing seems to work, ive also heard stuff about a meshes folder, which my oblivion doesnt seem to have. all i have is music shaders textures and video. i really would like to try some of the best mods, but i cant do anything if all i get is these damn exclamation points, please help me out.

when you unzip your mod (for example its a sword mod) there must be a meshes folder (and some others). you have to put this meshes folder into the data folder of oblivion.

for example: C:\Games\Oblivion\Data

if there is no meshes folder in your data folder, yous put the meshes folder of the mod into your oblivion data folder!

you can also unzip the mod in any other folder as long as you copy and paste the mod folders into your data folder!

If you use an unzipping program like 7zip (FREE and highly recommended) or Winrar, (Free to try but nags you to buy) then when you unzip directly into the data folder it will automatically create the needed folders and place the textures meshes etc in their proper place IF the mod maker has packaged them properly. If you create the folders yourself, then the unzip program will use the existing folders. You may get a warning message saying it may overwrite. Ignore it - instead of overwriting it will append to the existing data in the folders.

The most common mistake is copying the data folder from the mod into the existing data folder which gives you a data folder inside the original data folder data/data to avoid that always download the new mod into a separate folder outside of Oblivion, then unzio that into the Oblivion/data Not all makers pack their mods the same way though - so watch for those that sat "unzip directly into the Oblivion folder" instead of the data folder.

i tried to save the zip file in the data folder, that way i can open it and have it do whatever it is it needs to do, however, when i do the folder isnt there, and when i DO see it it has a little lock icon on it, and it will not allow me to open it or anything, (i am the admin) then i read somewhere that this is what it usually is like on the default path of oblivion, now that ive changed the directory by reinstalling, i am able to put the zip files there, thanks for everything! im finally able to play my mods ^_^ although its really stupid that i have to change the directory just so i can use a zip file! oh well.

Not so stupid. This keeps hackers from getting into your Program Files and changing important files into something malicious without your knowledge. Plus if you do any extensive modding, and you wouldn't be here if you didn't intent to, you will appreciate the easier access to your Oblivion folder.
