Morrowind modding compared to Oblivion modding

So I recently started Morrowind again and I was searching for mods and I'm surprized that there are so few mods for Morrowind compared to the mods available for Oblivion. I mean Morrowind is out since 2002 and has only 1900 mods on Nexus and a couple more on PES, but my point is there is a huge difference between the two games when it comes to mods. Oblivion has close to 19.000 on Nexus only and it's been out four years after Morrowind. Also most Morrowind mods seem buggy and outdated and there are very few options(at least here) for the players to pick from. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining about anything here, I just realized this as I never payed to much attention to Morrowind modding until lately. So after one week of searching both on Nexus, PES and some other sites I came up with 100 or so mods that work just fine together, but I'm also sad as I was hoping it would be more hard(AND FUN) to choose the right ones, instead I had close to no options(except for house/weapons mods).

I'm also glad I found some of these mods as I stumbled across them by accident. Well, with all that beeing said it's time to start a fresh game and have some fun for a couple of hours after a week of searching and testing. :P

To make this short, I was expecting to find a lot more diversity for Morrowind mods.

Cheers,

Pushkatu!

PS: I posted this here as there is more activity then in Morrowind forums and it's also about Oblivion.

In some aspects modding morrowind is easier, the big difference is that there wasn't a wiki. Although oblivion has been known a lot more because of bethesda's advertising campaign, I think the simple fact morrowind modding had/has to be learned all by yourself is the biggest factor why less mods have been made or still being made. You can say the aspects were limited, I call them easier..the fact that it wasn't easy to know them compared to oblivion makes oblivion the winner again.

What I'm wondering though, what kind of mods are you looking for then? I couldn't really get that from your post. From what I know most mods are of people that managed to create their own version of their balmora-resident :P. Others are the crafting, visual and weapon mods as you said..

I am not looking for any specific mods, just for more diversity. For example I have x,y,z mods that basicly do the same thing. X mod was released in 2004 and it's never been updated ever since, thus making it incompatible with a great number of mods. So X is out of the question. Next, I have Y that's a realy good mod, not outdated, but full of reported bugs, bugs than I found myself and thus making it imposible to play unless you want your game to crash every couple of minutes. And then I have Z, a nicely done mod that works great and the only option I have if I want to keep my game clean. You see what I mean now? :P

Oh, there's certainly more Morrowind mods than that. You might want to give Yacoby's ES Search a try. Apparently, it has 11,000 records of Morrowind mods. (Though some are duplicates, because authors upload to multiple sites.)

Still not as much as Oblivion's 19,000 records though. :P

Thanks for the link, that might be useful. The only "problem" is that you have to know what you are looking for. :P

Those new to Morrowind modding might find it difficult to use that as they have no clue about Morrowind mods, but I might find a couple new mods there, especialy on Elric site. :P

True. :P

And yes, ElricM is a good place for Morrowind mods, though I've heard Great House Fliggerty has quite a collection too.

Keep in mind that the tools are getting better and better (e.g. Blender, GIMP, etc.) and more tutorials are coming out which makes it easier to get into modding.

Anyone even remotely interested in modding Oblivion has so many reading / reference materials that most simply don't know where to start as opposed to the days of Morrowind where it was the other way around.

When I started modding Oblivion, I simply wasn't interested in Morrowind because all the screenshots that I've seen make it look like a VERY low-poly world. Sure, there have been some cosmetic overhauls but it still looks very low-poly compared to Oblivion.

I doubt we will see such a difference when TESV comes out so it will be interesting to see how many mods are available for it after a couple of years. If there were a vast difference in how well TESV looked over Oblivion, I'd probably move over completely but I'll bet that I will be sticking with Oblivion for a while (at the very least to finish up my WIPs)

I guess it's graphics for many people. I'm not all for that, I like more lore depth, and Morrowind gives me that. Also with MGE you can get pretty nice graphics for it. As for tools and stuff like that I have not found many tutorials for Morrowind, but plenty for Oblivion. I have to agree it's getting old, but it was love at first sight for me :P

I really did enjoy morrowind a few years ago....

The maps are fascinating, the quests are plentiful, I really enjoyed every single bit of it.

But when I found thenexus I didn't bother with morrowind mods. Why? Because the graphics are horrible. I am sorry, but the characters are too damn ugly, it really ruins it. I mean, to me it matters, I don't know about you guys.

Morrowind has my 10/10 rating, but I can't play it anymore. It just looks too crappy. Except for the maps

This is Morrowind in 2010:

I think it looks better than Gothic3 and Gothic3 was released in 2006.

How can you not like that?
