New To Gamingsource, Not Too Bright

I'm pretty expereinced with Morrowind but Oblivion is driving me crazy and I obviously need help.

I can't "grab" anything, can't put things on tables or in display cases and the Z key does not appear to do anything.

I've searched the web and scoured through lots of forums and players seem to take for granted that grabbing or placing items is so obvious that it needs no explanation. So it must be my airheaded skull.

When I hold the left-click in inventory like the manual says, I always get a message that says

"You do not have enough room to drop this item."

It may be feeble, but one of things I loved about Morrowind was creating my own home. I used the Void plugin and decorated like crazy. After doing all the quests I spent hundreds of additional hours just working on my "place."

I've just started playing Oblivion but I can't do any of this and it is really taking the joy out of the game for me.

Any help would be really, really appreciated.

Welcome to the forums, have fun and don't spam. ^^

Don't fret, physics manipulation in Oblivion is rather sketchy. Dropping things from inventory is easier done via shift+left click as that will just drop it somewhere nearby. Holding left click requires that you have a completely clear space in front of your character's head, and even then it'll sometimes say you don't have room.

Pressing and holding the Z key while the hand icon is over an item will pick it up. Then just use the mouse to steer it (while holding down Z). You can do this with a few items that don't have a hand icon as well, such as the chains in your prison cell. You won't be able to lay out a home as in Morrowind as this new system is very clumsy and inaccurate. If you want to decorate a house you'll need to make one in the CS, I'm afraid. Placing objects just so just isn't possible in-game anymore. Not unless someone somehow mods things so it is, anyway.

Hi Airhead, Switch. I miss the ability to place objects as well. I loved the book rotator, the wine rack mod, and weapon rotation in morrowind. It seems like perhaps every object is actually lifted off the surface which it appears to be resting on, when I pick up an object from a table, all the objects 'jump' and spill clumsily, sometimes to the floor. "All I did was pick up and apple..." I think to myself. Do different machines handle physics differently? Or is this a problem that everyone sees but just lets slip by? I have thought of looking into the editor and seeing if there would be a way to lower the objects...but that would be a ridiculous amount of work...assuming that is actually the problem. Should the whole table react if I pick up a fork from a dinner setting?

It's because Havok is still in its infancy and can be good, when dealing with single objects, but when it comes to objects interacting it goes nuts. It's the same on everyone's computers. I've found that the object hover is automatic as soon as you turn physics on in the CS. For some reason everything offsets from the thing it's sitting on, which just looks plain silly really. There doesn't seem to be a thing you can do about it. :/
