ataris2145
Recently, my friend got into mods. He got 60+ FPS normally. Then he installed OBSE. Upon running the game, the framerate was then capped (no movement + or -) at 30 FPS exactly. We tried everything in the book until he uninstalled OBSE. Then his framerate was back to normal again. So, going back to my constant-20-or-below-FPS Oblivion, I uninstalled OBSE. Suddenly, my framerate jumped to 30+ and I was able to increase the resolution from 800x600 to 1280x1024. It was amazing. I would really like to be able to use OBSE. I am using the latest beta version. Does anyone know why OBSE is capping my FPS?
LFact
Have you or your friend been installed Oblivion Stutter Remover? If you installed it, you can change maximum FPS by editing .ini file.
ataris2145
Ah....my friend, you have my deepest thanks. :) Now, that brings up two more questions: How do I manipulate the max and min fps? Can I just make both 99 so that I always have the highest fps? And does this work the same way with Streamline?
LFact
Edit MaximumFPS, MinimumFPS from \Data\OBSE\Plugins\sr_Oblivion_Stutter_Remover.ini:FPS_Management = { _comment = Basic FPS stuff, switches to slow-motion on low FPS; in the past this has occaisonally produced bugs like the NPCs-dropping-dead issue; the issues are believed to be fixed but if you suspect you are having related problems you can try disabling bAllowSlowMotion which is the main suspect for any problems relating to FPS management bAllowSlowMotion = 0 MaximumFPS = 0;If 0, the maximum FPS won't be set. It will be high as possible your machine can get. MinimumFPS = 20 iSmoothFrames = 0 iSmoothMode = 0 iSleepExtra = 2 bFPSConsoleSPAM = 0 iSchedulingParanoia = 1 iHardMaxFrametime = 200 } And disable StreamSmooth by editing Data\Streamline\INI Files\sl.ini:;=============================================================================== ==== ; [Main Features Settings] Toggle Streamline Features (1=on, 0=off) ;=============================================================================== ==== set SLv.Purging to 1; Turn on Streampurge? (cache purging) set SLv.FPSsmoothing to 0; Turn on Streamsmooth? (FPS smoothing) set SLv.Streamsaving to 1; Turn on Streamsaving? (timed autosaves) set SLv.Streamsight to 1; Turn on Streamsight? (FPS enhancer)Then reload sl.ini in-game Streamline menu. Never expect always having 'highest' FPS. The game engine is not-so-optimized, you can get easily low FPS while in combat or having many NPCs near.
bben46
OBSE by itself does not cap framerate. However some mods do. If that mod requires OBSE, then not using OBSE will cause it to NOT work, thereby removing the framerate cap. Using a mod that for some reason caps framerate - then setting the allowed framerate to max just defeats the reason for having the mod in the first place. If your system is good enough to run a constant 60 FPS then you have no need for a mod that caps framerate - get rid of it. Note: the effective framrate of US TV (NTSC) is 30p (actually 60i or 30 +30 alternating) if you want to be super precise, its 29.97 FPSA film camera - as in a movie theater is actually 30p (non interlaced) European PAL & SECAM format TV are both actually a little less at 25p (50i, 25 +25 alternating) now that you are totally baffled by technical detail what this means is movies are 30 FPS, and US TV is 30 FPS. So why should you insist that a game be double that - anything above 30 FPS is better than movies. Many games are actually locked at 30 FPS (Halo 3) Your monitor is probably limited to 60 FPS max (some will do 70 or 72) Instead of looking at your max frame rate, look at your worst case if it is below about 25 you will start to see slow downs. If your worst case is 30 or above, you don't have a problem. Most people can't tell the difference in FPSif it is both consistent and above 30. (although some can) There are other things besides just FPS that can affect your vision experience during a game, such as monitor latency and video card preprossing speeds. Monitor latency is how quickly an image fades from the monitor - poor latency leads to a small smearing effect on movement. Preprossing means the card may not be able to keep up with some features and keep things like shadows in sync - looking like it jerks around the edges of moving objects. Streamline also can cap framerate as it trades FPS for visual effects. A mod list might help. Then we can see what mods you have that may cap FPS. ataris2145
Thanks for clearing that up for me. So are there any benefits from these two plugins other than the FPS changer? Because, ultimately, I think I will just disable them. @bben46 That's interesting, and I had suspected much of that myself. Anything above 30 fps becomes difficult for me to see, but I can tell the difference. One of my friends has a 285gtx card, however, with 200 fps, and at that point I can't even see the difference, really. Those are the only two mods that I have that change the fps. Thanks for clearing that info up, though.
bben46
Streamline does have some other things in it. but the main thing is the trade FPS for Video features that is primarily for slower computers that slow way down in some situations - When I was using it i put a lower limit of 30 FPS on my game, and it was almost like going blind. I couldn't see anything at any distance, Enemies would attack out of nowhere. I would be hit by arrows and couldn't see where they were coming from. objects would suddenly appear directly in front of me. Then when I stopped and stood still for a minute, things further away would gradually start to fade in, and as soon as I moved fade back out. I lowered the minimum to about 18 and got fairly good visibility with slowdowns in combat and in some other places. A new graphics card and more RAM did wonders for my game and I no longer use streamline. Also, the latest version of Streamline v3.1 is a beta and will never be finished as the only person who understood how it worked vanished over a year ago.
