Crash at startup

Hey there. Recently bought myself the GOTY version and started adding mods. First I installed the game and addons (SI and Knights). Booted up, worked like it should. Started adding FCOM and some others. Booted up, died at the Bethesda logo or just after. Re-installed it. Same thing... Now I've re-installed, Googled, re-installed, removed the files in Appdata > Roaming > Oblivion and can't find any more files to delete...

Any help from here on would be greatly appreciated.

Here's my setup:

so clearly you system plays the game

and somewhere during your install of FCOM you missed an important file

So check that you have all the required fcom files

... this is why you should only add one or maybe two mods at a time... and with FCOM add ONLY FCOM before checking it again and playing it for at least an hour. It'll save you hell later. The one good thing is your first issue is easy enough to diagnose - crashing before the first Bethesda logo is almost always a missing master file. As you're using FCOM, I presume you have Wrye Bash (if you don't/can't use Bash forget FCOM. It won't work)

Look at your mod list in Bash. If any of them have a red check box as opposed to an orange or green one, thats the file thats missing the master. Highlight that mod then look to the right of the mod list about 3/4s of the way down the Bash window, that'll tell you what masters should be present, and if they are red and/or unchecked, you need to install/activate them.

If that don't help we're prolly gonna need a load order to help more.

Damn it. Don't post at the same time as me? K? Thanks. ;)

You've likely not used the disk to uninstall the game, and therefore you still have the registry entries. Get and run CCleaner (WITHOUT Oblivion Installed) to purge your registry of the installation data.

Failing this, head to the Nexus file site and find the articles section, then Bben's guide to uninstalling/reinstalling. I'd link it but my websense filter at work is ebil.

Oh god do I feel stupid now... It was in a place I checked (but not good enough it seems) and the most obvious place of them all.,.. The .ini and save files in the My Document>My Games folder.... I checked the Appdata and Roaming folders but I must've missed the My Games folder...

Oh well, all is well and I guess I'm going back to my old "Make backup and add one mod at a time" strategy... Thanks again for that Article Jenrai :)

No worries mate.

Should probably thank Bben actually. He's got one for everything, from installing and using mods with vista/win 7 to unblocking your neighbours kitchen sink. heh heh. I know they've saved me several quite severe headaches.
