mortico
I've modified my Fallout 3 quite a bit... Unofficial Patch, Fook2, MMM, XFO and all the DLCs plus a few smaller mods. I've also downloaded a ton of the re-textures for the world and so on, plus a few radio stations and sound upgrades. Besides some normal crashing (that i had even with vanilla) I have everything working perfectly. It took a long time to get the installation *just right* so I was thinking of backing up my installation of the game so I wouldn't need to go through all the trouble again. I'm going to Rar the entire installation of the game and set it aside or burn it to dvd's. But I'm curious what else I would need to backup (other than saved games ofc). I'm thinking if I ever needed to reinstall for some reason (reformat, whatever), I would install the vanilla game to get most of the registry stuff back, then simply overwrite the install folder with whats in the RAR file. Would this work? Is there anything I'm missing?
Rabbit1251
I believe that all you need to do is back up the Data folder in it's entirety. If you reinstall the game all you need to do then is copy it over once again. Rabbit
blue_fox
This is a good idea. I think I'm going to do this too. I wish I had a dvd to burn it to. God this going to take forever. lol
Rabbit1251
Don't forget that you will have to install FOMM and FOSE and like programs. They are not modifications and do not install like modifications so you will have to do them seperate. Rabbit

Rabbit Yeah but what if I just RAR the entire fallout 3 folder, FOMM and FOSE are both there already. Im thinking installing vanilla then overwriting the entire thing with my "old" fallout folder, FOMM and FOSE included. Only reason to install vanilla is so that all the proper registry entries are there.... tbh Im not even sure that it's needed. First time I try this i might just unrar the folder and see if it works :P Installation was 13.5gb, with normal compression the RAR ended up being 9.39gb, in 3 dvd-sized RAR files. Not bad at all really. I might not bother burning it tbh, i have enough HD space on my data drive.

Do give us an update when you find out if you would be so kind. Rabbit
GrandsonOfSam
I know some people have two or more Fallout 3 installs working at the same time, one completely vanilla, and one modded. So having the registry entries is probably required only for Games For Windows, mods with .exe installers and programs like FO3Edit or GECK. I know that over 90% games work without registry entries, so it's more than probable Fallout 3 does too.
