The Imperial City

Sellus Vunnis walked slowly down the street, it was late and most of the lights on this street where working but there where a few tracks of darkness where a thug could hide. The night at the arena had been a bad one and he had lost nearly a hundred spetims but the night was calm so had decided to walk home. As he entered a patch of darkness running in front of an alley he heard a deep hiss come from the darkness.

"Sssso what do we have here, a lost little Imperial out for an evening sstroll?"

Turning toward the voice Sellus saw an Argonian thug exit the alley and move toward him. The Argonian was dressed in your typical gang fashion wearing a leather jacket covered in small spikes made from metal, bone and other less identifiable material. Behind him came an Orc and an female Argonian.

"Huh huh, he does look a little lost don't he boss?" the Orc grunted at the Argonian.

"That he doesss, come friend maybe a little...charity will see you live through the night" chuckled the Argonian.

Sellus Vunnis had seen these types before, tough and arrogent when they think they have the upper hand, but cowerdly when stood up to. Sellus let his gaze slide over the three muggers noticing that the Orc and female where only armed with chains, clubs and a knife or two. The leader, however had a large twin barrelled pistol hanging from his belt.

Sellus smiled at the leader, "Septim Mark 3 tactical pistol if I am not mistaken."

The Argonian seemed to hesitate for a second but regained his composuer, "Yesss it iss my friend, my pride and joy"

"Nice piece my reptilian friend but useless hanging from your belt"

The leader quickly realised his mistake and tried to draw. Before he even got his hand to his belt a blast fire came from Sellus hand and turned the thug into a piece of jerky. The Orc turned and tried to run but tripped over the cowering female thug. Before he could stand the Orc was blown to pieces as another spell left Sellus's hand.

"Pleassse, don't kill me, pleassssse" cried the female.

"Leave" was the only response Sellus gave her.

As the thug ran down the alley Sellus turned back to the street and continued on his walk home. The watch would have a nice little mess to clean in the morning but that was not his problem. Sellus chuckled as he continued, despite advancments in technology magic was still powerful and most of these thugs ended up paying for their arrogence with their lives.

"Oh well," thought Sellus, "thats life in the Imperial City"

I have had this Idea mulling around my head for years, but I am only now remembering to put it down. The mod would be a total conversion that brings TES into a more modern theme. The reason I call it the Imperial City is because it would take place in the Imperial city itself.

Now before any one says anything think about the scale of the game. Despite the fact that the city in vanilla is small you need to realise that if Beth had made the game to actual scale it would take at least four in game days to get from the IC to Cheydinhall. So looking at that the city isle would be fairly large and as the IC expands to take the whole island it would grow very large. This is why the mod would take place in the city itself.

So now that I have said that I can continue.

Basically it has been fifteen hundred years since the Dragon Fire Crisis and despite that the world has advanced technologically and socially magic, trolls and undead have persisted. Thus everything is intertwined.

- As the mages grew stronger the common folk began to feel more and more powerless so they began to pick up science to compensate. Eventually technology reached the point where it could match magic in some cases.

- Medical technology has advanced and now even the poorest citizen can get some basic healthcare, however magic is still powerful and can do things medicine can't. Of course only the richest can afford magic treatment.

- The Mages guild is now considered an "Old Mans Club". Despite this they still get a few younger applicants every year.

- The arena is still in full swing but death matches are no longer legal. This has led to a large underground fight club.

- The Ten are still the largest religion. A few of the Daedra are now considred "legal" and there are churchs to Azura, Malacath and Meridia throughout the city. Most of the other deadra are worshipped in secret either individually or in cults due to their nature. (The ten include Martin Septim)

- Cars, guns, planes, etc exists HOWEVER, they have a flavor distinct from the real world, for example a pistol may load and fire like a glock but is actually designed to look like a dragon. The same goes with vehicles, buildings and others. They may be modern but they have a distinctly TES flavor.

This is a VERY brief run down of the mod. I am still hunting around for all my notes I have made over the years. When I was thinking of this for Morrowind I had called it Modernwind, lame I know.

So...ideas, thoughts?

Expanding the Imperial City to a new era is a good idea... But so far in the future? The best gun animation we can fathom comes from the stave animation. Muskets perhaps. Cars? The closest we have come as of yet is horse-pulled carts. Medicine can definitely be expanded. I have seen a syringe mod recently. New house styles? Maybe Duke City can help out.

I still must concur that this project is a bit big.

First of all, nice story.

On topic, I think this mod would be a very great mod. I won't call it impossible because it isn't, but I don't think you'll ever find enough modders to create it to quite the level you have imagined. Think about it; what you are essentially asking for is a sequel. New main quest (without one the game would be empty, and keeping the current quest directly contradicts the mod's background), very major changes to the land, new gameplay mechanisms, extensive animation/mesh/texture scratchbuilding, possibly even changes to the game's engine... You could do bits and pieces of course, replacing cells around the IC to represent the city's expansion, adding vehicles, guns; I imagine medicine would function exactly like potions. But the important thing is that you're setting this so far in the future. The game would feel half-finished if you left the current characters/storylines/quests as-is. You won't feel like you're in the future if you're spending half the game closing Oblivion gates for Martin Septim. But that's enough ranting for me; the night calls my name...

1500 years could be a bit much yes but then you never know what could have happened in those years. Ahh I was half asleep when I was putting this topic down so I guess I should clarify by saying that it would not be modern modern but more like late 30's early 40's tech.
