Save error

Ok this is a weird problem, if I save a game the save will create files in the save folder, but it will not be able to load the save in the game.

So if I make a save in the game the files will get to "Documents\My Games\Oblivion\Saves" the saved files will be there but I can not use them, the files will not show in the load thingy...

Anyone know what to do?

This problem could be a problem with your .INI oblivion settings.

I would like you to open up your My Games/Oblivion folder (Should be where the saves folder is). There, find a file called 'Oblivion'. It should be a .INI file that can be opened with wordpad. Open it.

Now press ctrl+f

A little window with a space for writing in it should appear. Type the following in the find bar, and press 'Find Next'

SLocalSavePath

It should direct you to a line of words that say

SLocalSavePath=Saves\

*** If this 'SLocalSavePath' line has anything other than '=Saves\' in front of it, then it may be your problem.***

Installing mods that change this .INI(Also known as a Configuration Document) document to disable borders, or other functions of this file may accidentally change this line. Experienced Oblivion users (in which I consider myself) sometimes change the file path to something different so the save loading menu in oblivion isn't cluttered with all of your past saves. I do this to start a new set of saves for reasons that are my own.

I hope this helps you. Troubleshooting was never my strongpoint.

Edit: If this doesn't work, it may be a format problem. go into your MyDocuments/Mygames/Oblivion/saves folder, and check of they are in 'ESS' format (Elder Scrolls Save).

  • 2 weeks later...

.pluggy files are saves of your current pluggy (obse plugin) configurations relating to your saves.

.OBSE (obose?) files are saves of your OBSE plugins and data relating to those saves.

Anything with .bak is a backup of that save, made by default, just in case.

All of those should be there and won't be causing you problems. Except I'm quite sure that OBOSE should be

OBSE... can't check at the moment as I'm not at my comp. Ho hum. I'll nosey at that later.

The obvious first question would be did you add/remove any mods right before this started happening. If so, remove em and see if that helps.

Try making new saves with a different or new charector. If that doesn't help it might be a corrupted install.

The saves not showing in the load menu screams corrupted header, which I think is pretty much fatal, though I've been wrong before. Check the post pinned in this very board about corrupted saves at the top of page 1.

If it does work with different &/or new toons, its more likely the save you are loading from is either corrupt or bloated (NOT the same thing, but can lead to the same place - saves that don't work) Do you use the auto-save feature? If so, disable it. Its known to break saves. Once you've disabled it, try to save again. If you can, make a save in a NEW SLOT and delete the ones that were giving you grief.

Bloating Can be cleaned using Wrye Bash- right click the save you want to clean under the saves tab.

Check the size of your save (ess) files. Theres wildly differing opinions on what actually constitutes a bloated save, so it probably varies from system to system, build to build, but the general guidelines I would work on are under 8MB is golden. Between 8 & 12MB will work, but it'll likely save & load slow - you're gonna want to clean that soon. Between 12 & 24mb Clean it and do it now - if it works your lucky. Real lucky. More than 24mb - kiss it good bye. Clean it. Maybe you'll get lucky. If you do don't buy a lottery ticket for a while. You've just used up about 3years worth of your luck.

Let us know if any of that helps.

Good Luck.

Well I did some more searching and I think it's a corrupted install, so I will re-install it and it should get fixed. But I'm kinda busy this week so I will see if I get the time to fix it.

Thanks for the help tho.
