Long War for Mac OS/X - pointers / advice?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I guess I wrote a new post which I should have posted here.

I'm new to modding. I just downloaded the latest xcom long war mod and tried to install it by running the script for mac. But it stopped halfway with "Can not find game files. Please specify xew dir location."

...

PS: I purchased via Mac App Store. Not Steam.

You need to read the "OS/X Mod Installation" section of the "Basic Guide to installing mods" wiki article. It has some specifics about the edits you need to make to the LW install script to fix this for the App Store version.

The basic instructions in the "OS/X Mod Installation" section of the "Basic Guide to installing mods" wiki article still hold, but you have to substitute the partition where your game is installed for the "~" in the "INSTALLDIR" portion. The "~" is a recognized shorthand for your "home directory", but in your case that is not the partition where the game is located.

If you don't follow that, then you need to educate yourself on how Unix/Linux mounts drives as "partitions". Once you have identified the partition that is your "external drive", you should be able to find the rest of the game installation path and substitute that into the script.

If you still need help, give us some specifics such as the path where your game actually resides.

I've tried everything I can think of.

I see output that I don't even know what it means.

This is the output from Terminal on my last attempt:

There is no other "definitive guide" to installing LW on a Mac than what is in the "Basic Guide", because none of the LW development team has one. (Neither do I.) The install script was your best shot at that. The best you are going to get otherwise is Linux based help, which fortunately for you is primarily what OS/X consists of. (We don't seem to have any actually Mac gurus who stick around to help people in your situation.)

It doesn't help matters that the various versions of XCOM from different Mac retailers apparently have subtle differences in the paths under which they store the game files.

If the above output looks like gibberish to you, then you lack the knowledge of Linux folder structure to interpret it. If you do not understand that, then you won't be able to make the edits to the "install-lw-osx.sh" script to change it to the correct path. So, first of all you need to educate yourself sufficiently to follow the paths listed in that output. This can be found on the Internet with the search phrase "linux pathing". That is simply a hard truth.

The line after "Copying install files..." begins with "cp:" which is the output of the "copy" command. That path is what the script is looking for to copy FROM (i.e. should be the LW version of the file), but it can't find it. Specifically it is looking for the "./XEW/xcomgame.int" file. You have to figure out where that file actually exists on your machine in a similar path, and then modify the install script to use your path instead. Simple in concept, really, but you will have to do a little digging.

Thanks, but no thanks.

It's their product. If they can't or won't get it to run, I'm not going back to school just to use their product.

If I wanted to learn Linux, I wouldn't own a Mac.

It looks to me like they have a great product, one I'd really like to try, but they didn't finish the job, and can't be bothered to do so now.

Have a nice day, and Happy New Year.

Okay, I've done some reading.

If I understand you, Dubious, and I understand what I just read, (and I may, I may not. Never discount the possibility that I've made a mistake. My reputation as a genius is overrated.) there is a command somewhere in the script that tells Terminal to copy files from the Long War file to a folder in the game package, and Terminal can't find that file because it can't find that folder.

Let's start there, please. Have I got that right?

If I do, I'll start hunting through the mod files for the right folder.

That all said, is it possible to figure out where all the mod files go, and just grab them by hand and drag them over?
