DAO eye colour

Thanks.

I posted on BW it seems 3 people so far have the same problem as me, in that the eye colour that comes with the game doesn't work and 1 person said their's works but only now and again. Someone did suggest my graphics card could be a bit old and something about algorithms which made sense.

My problem is having spent my life around programmers, engineers and users until a few years ago, I understand everything they are saying and can go off and do it, but can't use the jargon myself, probably because in my work I've always had to explain to people in laymans terms and I've never got to grips with the language   which can be a bit of a problem.

Think I might be on the track of the elusive eye colour problem. Last night I downloaded the mod 'T7TntOveride' and it is working, well sort of. Instead of showing up as blue and gold on my screen it looks black with white spots not gold. Could the problem be patch 1.03 or is it time I replaced my graphic's card as someone on the BW forum suggested?

I don't have a problem with replacing the card, but it seems stupid to rush out and do that if the problem could be the patch, so far I've always been pleased with the colours on my screen. I did go to a site for calibrating my monitor and according to that the monitor doesn't need calibrating.

ell46, how many subdirectories deep are your eye colour files? iirc dragon age only digs down through a maximum of three subfolders - had a similar issue myself recently where certain overidden files were not showing in game as they were too deep within the override subdirectories. As soon as I moved them into a parent subfolder, they showed up. Try moving the eye files into a "higher" directory and see if they show up.

Many mods ship with a overwrought series of subdirectories, and if you chose to add another "parent" folder on top of that (when you extract from the RAR/ZIP) this might be the reason for your trouble.

Just did a test and moved all my eye colours into override\eyes\newfolder\newfolder\newfolder and sure enough, all my eye slots turned black, so I'd definitely check if moving the files helps you.

Didn't know that.

I've just checked and they are in F:\ please don't ask about that it's a sore point  so that's F:\ell\My Documents\BioWare\Dragon Age\packages\core\override and then either files of folders.

Is that too deep or OK?

It counts folders from the "override" directory itself. So, wherabouts are the eye colours in relation to the override folder?

For example:

F:\ell\My Documents\BioWare\Dragon Age\packages\core\override\Folder1

Would be a nested depth of 1. And

F:\ell\My Documents\BioWare\Dragon Age\packages\core\override\Folder1\Folder2

would be a depth of 2

And something like

F:\ell\My Documents\BioWare\Dragon Age\packages\core\override\Folder1\Folder2\Eyes\EyeTints

Would more than likely be too deeply buried - at least in my experience. Like I said, as a test, drop your eye-related files straight into the override directory itself and see what happens.

VERY interesting. I did not know that the game had a limited ability to hunt subdirectories. Very interesting and informative, indeed. Terra, thats a tremendous info share, thanks very much for posting that! *kudos given*

Ell- in simple, non-english.... Override would be considered your root folder as far as the game itself is concerned for mods. So anything that was 4 folders down, from root/override wouldnt be read. It wouldnt read all the mod's files, just the ones in the override, subfolder, subfolder, subfolder.... [x]subfolder. ([x] being the one it wouldnt read).

Also- to the best of my knolwedge, subdirectories inside a mod arent necessary. Its simply like that because of how the toolset extracts the mod, when it's created in toolset. So say that you've got Override/darkewolfs eyes/eyes/tints/textures/eyes2 --- all the files from eyes2 could be cut n paste into darkewolfs eyes and not cause any problems, as long as they arent the same filename as a file that exists in darkewolfs eyes folder (in which case windows would ask you to keep them, rename them, or overwrite them (but you know that). that would be a problem. but otherwise no. taking them out of a sub, and moving them up wouldnt be a problem.

Now I say in most cases. I do not know how Ovverride files such as Natural Bodies all in One work. So that Could be an exception. (And just to clarify, those are installed via a file format called "Override" thru an app called da mod manager).

Got it

So I'm back to... is it the dreaded patch or is it my Graphic card, think I'll wait until they patch the patch or I have a mad moment and uninstall/reinstall the software without Awakening or an even madder moment and upgrade my PC. I wish I could remember when it was upgraded last, it might be time to do it again. I just can't bear the thought of being with my PC for a couple of days or even 1 for that matter. Light bulb moment I don't have to be I could use this while the new is built and then have the HDs moved over  that would work.

Can I ask please what is this 'Kudos' thing about, do you have to set up different passwords to the ones you use to sign in with to give them?

Well, all said, a vid card is a lot less expensive than a whole pc. (Especially with windows 7 takcking on an extra 300+ dollars) And very simple to install yourself. I managed to get mine on sale at microcenter.com for about 49.95 +tax (tho we have a store right down the street, so I walked in and bought mine, rather than thru their site). Tho too, it also depends on what kind of case you've got, as to what would fit.

But yeah, very easy to install. Unplug the PC from the wall socket. Unplug any cables connected to your video card. take off the side panel of the case, and unscrew one, maybe two screws holding the card in. Gently, but firmly pull the card STRAIGHT OUT and set it aside. Gently but firmly push the new card into the slot STRAIGHT IN, and then screw in the retaining screws, put the panel back in, reconnect your cables, plug the pc back in to power, turn it on, and run the installation disk/cd/dvd.

Physical install takes 10 minutes, if nothing goes wrong. The drivers install, well....that varies.

Now, youd also need to know which type of card slot you'd need.

theres agp, theres ide, and PCI and PCIe. IDE is REALLY old. Probably not. AGP is old, but still in use here and there. Not very common on anything built in the last 4-5 years. PCI is more common, but anything built in the last 2-3 years most likely has a PCIe (PCI express) card slot.

easiest way to tell would be to either look at the spec sheet for your system, and then do a google search for the motherboard. that would tell you what kind of slots that it has on it. Or to call the manufacturer.

If it's graphics failure you'll find out soon enough. If you have an ATI card though the latest 10.3 drivers aren't very good, so go grab the 10.2 Hotfix drivers off Guru3D and grab Driver Cleaner while you're there.

Do a normal uninstallation of the drivers, then run Driver Cleaner. Then Restart.

Then install the 10.2 Hotfixes (if ATI obviously) and you should be good to go :)

If you are nVidia just refresh with the latest WHQL drivers for your card. Same Process.

I have got ATI and I can't even remember the last time they did a driver update for mine. I will definitely check out the Hotfix and the Driver Cleaner, thanks every so much for sharing these and the instructions it's certainly worth a try.
