Data file location doesn't exist?!?!

Recommended Posts

So I have a really strange problem

I cant find the data files at all!

Some websites tell me where its located but my computer thinks the location is invalid

If you need to know this, I am running my PC on windows 7 not xp or vista, maybe that's the problem?

I had an old computer that ran on XP and i could find the data files with no problem So Is it windows 7's fault?

It's not windows 7 for sure. After pressing new game what happens? Its loads level and you can play or crashes? And by the way if it loads and not crashes what with the textures and models?

somewhere you should have either a shortcut or a start menu that points to this game.

It either points to a file named "oblivion.exe" or "oblivion.launcher"

Check its properties.

That location is where the data file should be located.

Are you sure that's the folder that I put my mods in?

Mods always go in the Oblivion\data folder. Nowhere else.

How and where did you install the game?

For both Vista and Win7 it should NOT be installed in the default location. As that puts it in the protected 'program files' folder where it will not allow mods.

instead, install it in a new folder outside of the program files - such as C:\Games\Oblivion

Here is a link to my complete uninstall/reinstall procedure located in the articles section of the Nexus

You can install it in the default section and use it as a backup to the game in case you need to reset your oblivion files, then you can copy it to another folder. That's what I did, now the default installation rests peacefully in Program Files while a copied version + mods rests in the location you recommend.

I have windows 7, and I installed the game to the default "Program Files (x86)", and I've had no problems at all relating to that stuff.

I notice nobody ever mentions that directory on this site. Windows 7 64-bit does not install to "Program Files" by default.
