I keep running into deadends when it comes to converting nif to dds so I can open the nif file in Gimp in dds format. is a program called NIBLE really suppose to work for this or blender? I do as people ask in tuts but it doesn't work maybe anyone have an alternative progam? I might even buy photoshop but I don't want to if I don't have to. thnx

I think you are a bit confused.

NIF = Model

DDS = Texture

NIF files can be modified with NifSkope or imported into Blender or exported from Blender. However, the NIF files do have texture paths stored inside them that point to what texture (DDS) file they use but it is only a text string.

DDS files are compressed textures that usually have what is called MipMaps images which are smaller and smaller images which are used when the object is farther and farther away...also related to image quality settings. DDS files can be converted to PSD or PNG images using many different tools like DDS Converter 2 and Paint.NET. Paint.NET can open DDS files directly but other image editors such as GIMP and Photoshop require plugins in order to import and export to DDS format. It is recommended that you keep your images that you edit stored in the native file format of the image editing tool you use...such as PSD if you use Photoshop to avoid re-compressing a compressed image....over and over...kinda like a fax of a fax. The image degrades each time you convert to DDS format.

Here's what I'm saying I want to open my Nif in Gimp so I can change the look of it. Atleast that's how they make it look in the tuts down there, sorry it took me so long to reply, found that I had other things I needed to take care of.
