Crown of the Imperial City

Having long been a fan of the Elder Scrolls series and particularly grateful for it through two deployments I've also been constantly fascinated by the rich lore surrounding the game world and the various races and nations that inhabit it, especially those of Cyrodiil. The seat of the Empire, the center of the world.....that's what the Imperial City says to me and in this line of thinking I've looked long and hard for something that would really SET the city apart and while I think an arena is great and all my mind thinks back to Roman society where many of the largest cities boasted an arena or an ampitheatre it was the truly great ones that were blessed with a hippodrome (also called a circus) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circus_Maximus.

Hell, I know such an undertaking would be massive and would require new scripts, LOD files, meshes, and a very painfulintheassload of troubleshooting. But honestly if it could be done it would be, in my opinion, a suitable crown for the Imperial City and while I have neither the time nor know-how to accomplish this on my own I would be happy to provide what nominal support I can. So can it be done? And if so.......any takers?

Essentially, I had an idea a few weeks ago for a hippodrome for the Imperial City, a place where horse races, charioteers, and the like.....many more fans to give it that hot shite feel.

A nice idea indeed!

Let's see...

As kieran says, to many fans= a massive hit on FPS.

It would be difficult to set the pathing of the NPC's so that they don't end up walking into a wall. An advanced AI worker would be required.

Also, actually creating a challenge for the player would be difficult, perhaps your competitors horses speed increases as you progress? Or you start out with a lowly horse, and an upgrade system is implemented?

this is a very nice idea indeed imo. probably the best way to make it challenging would be to have classes of horses, like start off with paint horses, then all the way up to blacks. if possible you could do a carrot speed boost thing, ie: you get 4 carrots you hotkey in a race and they give a temporary speed boost. or maybe even just 1 carrot, making it extremely strategic. good idea though

That's where the challenge lies. A good strategy to make it a challenge.

theres also the question of where to put it. when you consider open cities, better cities, bananasplit better cities, and the literal pile of frequently used IC mods.. that island starts to look a little small. so maybe you could do it as an underground (but above the sewer :P) track. this would also allow you to do it without having LOD or long distance objects, big piles of trees and grass, and all the other outside things. thus you could put in more npcs, etc. and just put a door from the Arena District (a big awesome door, mind you!) or something alike to it, leading down to the horse races. that would assume that your race horse is being supplied by someone else (ie a gambler who wants you to race his horse for him, knowing your the fabled hero of cyrodil and can do anything!). you could also work in plot twists like one of the other racers wants you to lose at one point, so you get bombarded with arrows that effects your speed. one where your horse is poisoned and you need to investigate it. one where you lose by a big margin to one racer, and investigate to find out hes giving skooma to his horse (lol). im just throwing ideas at the wall here, trying to flesh out the concept.
