Broken Steel problem

I am running Fallout 3 in Windows 8.

I installed it from DVD into C:\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda Softworks\Fallout 3

After some fiddling initially it has been running ok. I had to install Windows Live to get the game to run

I have just installed Broken Steel and Point Lookout from DVD.

Fallout 3 is still working fine, but there is no sign of either of the add-ons when I play the game. The Downloads option on the Fallout main menu is greyed out

The main.bsa , sounds.bsa and .esm files are in C:\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda Softworks\Fallout 3\Data

Tried running via nexus mod manager and it does not find Broken Steel or Point Lookout.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Completely uninstall the game and each and every file associated with the game.

Install Fallout 3 in a location outside of "Program Files". I have my game installed at C:\Bethesda Softworks\Fallout3. You can do this by creating the Bethesda Softworks folder on your "C" drive and direct the installation by using the Custom Install option.

Don't forget the 1.7 update and the new GFWL .dll. Use Fallout Mod Manager to start the game and install mods.

Start the game to create the .ini files.

Many thanks for that. I will try it. Is there a way of keeping my present saved game?

Saved games are kept in a location outside of the "Program Files", so you should be able to save them. They should be in a folder "My Games" in the path "C:\Users\(Name)\Documents\My Games\Fallout3\Saves.

Also in the Fallout3 folder will be the games .ini files. These too should be deleted. They will be generated again when you first launch the game.

When you install Fallout 3, you will need to install the 1.7 patch and the GFWL .dll before you install the DLCs. If your computer hangs up while reading the DLC CD, quit the install and restart your computer in "Safe" mode. There is a known problem with some OS reading the DLC CD if you are not in "Safe" mode.

Thanks for that. Very helpful. I have re-installed FO3 from disc following the instructions on the thread. Played the game up to megaton and seems fine. Now going to try installing the add-ons.

Well, I've done all that. Uninstalled FO3, reinstalled in C:\Bethesda Softworks\Fallout 3, updated to 1.7 patch, have GFWL, changed the ini files as described.

Unfortunately , nothing has changed. Fallout works fine , but the Broken Steel add-on still not working.

The only other thing I can think of is, did you enable it in either the launcher or if you're using a mod manager, in the mod manager? Do you have BrokenSteel.esm and PointLookout.esm in the Data files?
