Burnagirl
I had exactly the same problems and it drove me %@#$ ..... I had all my mods in a file on my desktop and extracted them like a good little girl - meshes go into the F3\data\meshes (file) and the same went for the textures and sound files (they all went into their respective files. And lastly the esp's and esm's were just dragged over into the data file - there all nice and pretty ............. until it froze and crashed and froze and crashed etc. etc. etc. This happened all the &%$# time, I tried changing a lot of different things and nothing worked until .... 1) I opened FOMM and used it's package manager to install ALL the mods (in those cases where the FOMM package manager told me that I had to manually install certain files, I did so), 2) Then I ran FO3Edit - http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=637 - This seems to have worked because I can now count the crashes I've had on one hand in a month's worth of play, and I play up to 3 to 6 hours daily, yes daily !Maybe, just maybe this will work for you too, so give it a try. Hope it helps.
roquefort
"I tried opening process explorer/task manager before I started playing, but I couldn't get out of the game once it froze." You could try ctrl/alt/del, "F", Alt"E", enter, if you can't get to the desktop.

What you're actually doing is opening the Task Manager (which you can't see because it's hidden), "F" to highlight Fallout.exe, "Alt E" for "End Process", then Enter to confirm. Don't do this if you have other exes beginning with "F" running as you might close the wrong one. It works for me if I can't close the Fallout window. If you haven't other programs running the fallout.exe should be the only program in the list. So you can hit Alt+T ("kill Task") and Enter. Guess that's absolutely the same, just with different short cuts.
Nadin
That's all well and good, but he has windows seven, making that advice useless.
BossDweebe
Yes Win 7 is slightly different. Ctrl / Alt / Delete opens task manager only after windows switches to the start up window.Where you have a short list of options. This is only happens when a game (or maybe other apps) locks up. Normally Task Manager opens on the Desk Top as with XP. XP or Win 7 sometimes CAD just won't work for me and a reboot is necessary. When this happens I will often reboot again via Windowsto clear my page file of errors. (I have my machine set up for this) This is especially helpful on my XP machine which has only 2GB RAM and512 w/gpu. Sometimes I have to do this twice (CAD) as when I open task manager the first time the game comes back.I normally close the game in the applications tab instead of the processes, probably no different, but sometimes quicker to findas the game is not always at the top of the list in 'processes', and has no quick reference icon. As for the quad core fix. I set mine to two. Seems to be all the performance necessary from my phenom 965. If anything I could do with a full GB video RAM instead of 896. (More so in GTA 4 - a RAM hungry beast).
phoneyLogic
You can also open Task Manager by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
Drackion
Yay for continuing problems. After a short break, I tried to play it again, and now it crashes again. It freezes, and I can hear the sound, but I continue to do stuff. For example, I was walking to the megaton gates, and I got outside of it, but my screen got stuck in Megaton. The odd thing is the screen gets stuck between 2 frames, sort of like it's flashing. It usually happens when I move the mouse, but sometimes in the menu screens too. It's a not a complete freeze like last time. CAD now works though, thankfully. Setup hasn't changed since last time. Thanks for the all help so far guys :)
